PRESS FOCUS: 2020

PRESS FOCUS: 2020
The year 2020 produced a series of photographs that documented global crises across health, society, and environment. In Texas, intensive care unit images revealed the medical strain of the COVID-19 pandemic, while scenes from Hart Island, New York, recorded the scale of pandemic fatalities through mass burial procedures. These photographs served as factual evidence of institutional response and mortality management under emergency conditions.
Environmental events were similarly recorded through direct observation. Fire crews in Australia were photographed monitoring extensive bushfires, illustrating the impact of climate-related disasters. In contrast, an Arctic image of a polar bear with her cub captured ecological fragility in a rapidly changing environment. Together, these photographs represented distinct but connected forms of environmental disruption.
Photographs from London, Thailand, Sudan, and Algeria traced political and social unrest through protest and representation. The Black Lives Matter movement in London, the anti-government demonstrations in Thailand and Algeria, and the depiction of Straight Voice in Sudan documented organised dissent and self-expression. In the same year, the Osiris-Rex spacecraft photograph extended this visual record into outer space, evidencing continued scientific pursuit amid global instability.
PRESS FOCUS is a YouTube series that presents ten defining press photographs from any particular year. Each episode showcases a curated selection of powerful and widely published news images, offering a visual record of key global events without narration or commentary.
The series highlights moments captured by photojournalists across the world — from politics and conflict to culture and climate — allowing the images to stand on their own. Press Focus serves as a concise annual snapshot of the year through the lens of the international press.
