Nick Hedges (1943 – 2025) was a British documentary photographer born in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire. He studied at Birmingham College of Art from 1965 to 1968, where he developed a strong grounding in socially engaged photography. His early work drew on research-led explorations of urban housing, establishing both his methodical approach and his interest in social documentation.

From 1968 to 1972, Hedges collaborated with the charity Shelter to produce a landmark photographic study of Britain’s worst housing conditions. He worked in multiple cities — including Birmingham, London, Manchester, Leeds, Bradford and Glasgow — systematically recording issues such as overcrowding, dilapidated structures and substandard sanitation. His working method combined a compact 35mm camera, natural lighting, repeat visits and an emphasis on building trust with residents; the resulting images were used to support Shelter’s research, policy advocacy and public awareness efforts.

In the years after his Shelter work, Hedges turned his attention to industrial and rural Britain, documenting coal miners, factory workers and the decline of traditional labour sectors. He taught photography in higher education, notably at Glasgow School of Art from 1980 until 2003, helping to shape a generation of socially conscious photographers. His Shelter archive was subsequently acquired by public institutions, and his images continue to inform both social-historical research and exhibitions on post-war urban life.
