Welcome back, fig lovers! I'm Ross the Fig Boss, and in this video, I share updates on upcoming semi-dormant tree sales on FigBoss.com, launch my new YouTube membership tiers for early video access, and discuss my work on fig synonyms and recent full-genome sequencing studies. I reflect on my appearance on the Pro Fig podcast alongside Brian and Chris (from persistentfig.com), where we explored DNA testing results across various fig varieties. While full genetic testing is expensive and helpful for identifying identical seeds, current technology doesn't always reflect practical horticultural differences—such as bud mutations or sports like skin color variations (e.g., Col de Dame Blanc vs. Noir) or growth rate variations (e.g., Smith vs. Texas BA1 and Col de Dame Blanc vs. Gigantina).

I emphasize my long-standing mission of trial-testing hundreds of trees to uncover these performance traits and transparently share synonym lists to save growers time and money. Walking through my orchard, I showcase specific examples such as Chipola vs. Black Madeira, various Celeste strains, and rain-resistant variations like Toro, explaining how plant hormones, tree vigor, and environmental factors influence leaf shape and fruit performance. While genetic testing provides great scientific clarity, side-by-side growing remains essential for identifying unique, valuable traits in fig varieties.
