In this YouTube video, fig expert Ross Raddi (known as "Ross the Fig Boss") discusses the strategies and variety selection required to successfully grow high-quality figs in rainy, humid regions like the Philadelphia area (Zone 7A). Following a multi-day storm, he walks through his yard to demonstrate how heavy moisture impacts fruit quality, explaining that rain quickly soaks into softening skin to cause swelling, skin cracking, and eye splitting. This damage subsequently exposes the interior flesh to fermentation and destructive pests like fruit flies, yellow jackets, and spotted wing drosophila. To minimize crop losses, Ross emphasizes the importance of proactively harvesting figs at roughly 60% to 70% ripeness before a major rain event. He also breaks down critical fruit traits that naturally shed water and prevent damage, such as a short "susceptibility window" (or hang time), elongated teardrop shapes, long stems and necks that allow the fruit to droop downward, and smaller overall fruit sizes.
Beyond varieties, Ross explores how environmental conditions, soil moisture, microclimates, and pruning techniques directly alter a tree's rain resistance. He explains how pruning decisions alter the tree's hormonal balance and growth vigor, which in turn influences fruit size, stem length, and neck length. For example, he points out that over-pruning can produce overly large figs that split easily, whereas leaving a tree completely unpruned can shorten stem lengths and increase splitting risks on certain varieties like Adriatic figs. Throughout the episode, Ross also takes viewers on a tour of his fall-blooming perennial front yard landscape, offers channel membership perks for early video access and plant discounts, and highlights how understanding plant origins—such as varieties carefully selected over centuries in northern Italy and France—can help growers select the best figs for damp climates.
