Best Cheesesteak in Greensboro? We Tried 15

Taste The Streets

Who has the best cheesesteak in Greensboro, North Carolina? We tried 15 cheesesteaks around Greensboro and the surrounding area to find out which local restaurant actually makes the best one.

15 cheesesteaks. 15 restaurants. 1 winner.

I’ve already tried 15 different cheesesteaks in Philadelphia, so going into this Greensboro food tour I had a pretty good idea of what I was looking for. But I also wasn’t expecting every restaurant in Greensboro to make a true Philadelphia-style cheesesteak.

For this video, I’m judging these for what they are: steak and cheese sandwiches.

I’m looking at the meat, seasoning, cheese, toppings, bread, how everything is cooked, how well the sandwich holds together, how much food you actually get for the money and, most importantly, how it tastes.

We went all over Greensboro trying cheesesteaks from butcher shops, pizza places, Mediterranean restaurants, neighborhood grills, a gas station and a few places I never expected to become serious contenders.

The 15 places in this Greensboro cheesesteak tour are:

🥩 Battleground Butcher Bar
🥩 Mario’s Pizza
🥩 HomeSlice Pizza & Subs
🥩 Sarah’s Kabob Shop
🥩 Ghassan’s Fresh Mediterranean Eats
🥩 Vito’s Italian Restaurant
🥩 Tony’s Food Mart
🥩 Moe’s Pizza & Subs II
🥩 Palermo Pizza on Market Street
🥩 Fox Oven & Grill on Groometown Road
🥩 New York Pizza on Tate Street
🥩 The Podium near the Palladium
🥩 Elizabeth’s Pizza on Lawndale
🥩 Slices by Tony
🥩 Dear Dad’s on Battleground Avenue

This tour was all over the place.

Some sandwiches had great meat but disappointing bread.

Some had plenty of toppings but barely enough meat.

Some had really good flavor but weren’t something I would drive across Greensboro to get again.

And several restaurants called their sandwich a Philly cheesesteak even though what they served was nothing like the cheesesteaks I’ve eaten in Philadelphia.

Then we started finding some real contenders.

Vito’s became one of the first places that really stood out. It had plenty of meat, good flavor and finally felt like we had found something that could compete for the top spot.

Elizabeth’s Pizza on Lawndale came in loaded with meat, properly seasoned steak, good cheese, fresh toppings and one of the better rolls of the entire tour.

Slices by Tony was another surprise. They use fresh toppings including mushrooms and tri-color bell peppers, and they make the bread for the sandwich from their homemade pizza dough. That one finished with a 9.1 out of 10.

At that point, I thought we had pretty much figured out who was at the top.

Then I found one more restaurant.

Dear Dad’s.

I didn’t even realize Dear Dad’s made a steak and cheese until after I thought this tour was basically finished, so we made one final stop.

That completely changed the ranking.

Dear Dad’s earned a 9.5 out of 10 and became the highest-rated steak and cheese out of all 15 places we tried.

So after eating our way across Greensboro, we finally had one winner.

Now, is it exactly like a cheesesteak from Philadelphia?

No.

After trying 15 cheesesteaks in Philadelphia and another 15 around Greensboro, I still haven’t found anything here that I would say is exactly the same as a true Philly cheesesteak.

But Greensboro definitely has some really good steak and cheese sandwiches.

And if there is a Greensboro cheesesteak that somehow didn’t make this list, put it in the comments. If enough people tell me about one, you already know I’ll go try it.
