How I Layer My Off-Grid Communications Network | EDCU

What happens when your normal method of communication stops working?
In this episode of Everyday Carry University (EDCU), I’m breaking down how I layer my personal communications network — from everyday cellular communication all the way through radios, Meshtastic devices, portable nodes, dedicated communicators, and longer-duration infrastructure.
This is not a “how to set up Meshtastic” tutorial and it isn’t meant to suggest that everyone needs the exact equipment I use. The idea is much simpler: don’t make one device, one network, or one piece of infrastructure your only option.
My communications setup uses multiple layers:
Layer 0 — Cellular
My phone remains the normal, everyday communication method when cellular infrastructure is available.
Layer 1 — Local Radio
DeWALT walkie-talkies give me simple, immediate radio communication without depending on cellular service.
Layer 2 — Portable Meshtastic
Compact Meshtastic nodes like the ThinkNode M3 and M4 give me another communication layer that can travel with people, vehicles, bags, or equipment.
Layer 3 — Mobile / Powered Nodes
Longer-runtime equipment can help maintain and extend the network while also giving me additional power and deployment options.
Layer 4 — Dedicated Communicators
LILYGO keyboard-style Meshtastic devices give me a standalone way to send and receive messages without making my everyday smartphone the only interface into the network. The M5Stack Cardputer ADV also gives me another compact communications/computing platform.
Layer 5 — Fixed / Long-Duration Infrastructure
Devices such as the ThinkNode M6 and Heltec node give the system a more persistent layer that can remain deployed rather than constantly traveling with me.
None of these individual layers is the entire communications plan.
The redundancy IS the system.
If one layer isn’t available, I want another option beneath it. That’s the principle behind how I’ve built my off-grid communications network and the larger lesson we’re covering in this EDCU class.

Video Summary
AI GeneratedThe speaker details the development of a multi-layered, off-grid communication network designed to ensure connectivity and safety on private property and during emergencies. By integrating cellular phones, walkie-talkies, and a LoRa-based Meshstastic network, the system provides redundant layers of communication that function independently of standard cellular infrastructure.
