Syracuse head coach Gerry McNamara talks about Kiyan Anthony’s improvement

The one thing you have to, right away from the start, you eliminate that dad and I play together when you get across the lines.
Now it's about coaching.
But I also understand probably what he goes through a lot, which not a lot of people do.
The criticism, the expectation, the pressure of being Carmelo's son. There's a lot that goes into that.
But at the same time, for me, I need to make sure that I maximize and set him on the right path that I feel like will make him a better individual player and a better team.
I think the thing that he and I have talked about is effective field goals.
Being more of a volume three-point shooter instead of more of an isolation score.
Do you use the ability to shoot to become more of an elimination dribble scorer?
There's a lot of things that factor in to how much better I think he can be.
Here's the reality. If you play a team that's choking angles off and they're denying this and denying that,
and you give him the ball and you let him go one-on-one, he's pretty damn good at it.
That's the value. Apple doesn't fall too far from the tree.
He has been taught his individual skill set in terms of how he moves and how creative he is to draw contact.
That stuff's real. He's been taught really well by his father.
It's a really big, valuable piece for me as a coach, knowing you're going to play different styles.
Knowing that if you're going to get a lot of overplay, this kid can go make a play.
I can draw up the best plays in the world. At the end of the day, a lot of people are going to blow it up.
It's smoother players on the court that can go make a play. He can go make a play.
The thing I'd like to see him be better at is knowing when he has space and attacking catches to shoot threes.
That, to me, will elevate the effective field goal percentage.
Now the closeout has to become more efficient, and if they aren't, he's going to elimination dribble you on the one dribble.
If you get to 12 feet, now it's about the read. Do you make the right read?
I just think he's got a long way to go in terms of trusting catch-and-shoot threes,
and I think that will elevate the effective field goal percentage to take him to a different level.
Now you don't need to always play with it in your hand. You can play with it off the catch, if that makes sense.
