Syracuse coach Gerry McNamara discusses rebuilding programs
Oct 8, 2026
There's a lot of factors of how you can turn it around fast.
A lot goes into it.
You can get it right and a lot of it just be you're coming from a different place bringing
someone with you and you know he's better than the other.
All of a sudden the pieces gel together.
You can get it right because you have so much damn money that now you can just go buy the
best players.
It depends on where you are.
I think we're in that direct between group to where we're never going to have the most
money but we're always going to be a product that's incredible history, that's going to
be worth watching, that's going to continue to produce pros.
I don't have a timeline.
My timeline, my demand is to win right away.
That's how I think.
How patient people are, that doesn't factor in because I'm impatient.
The thing I got right in year one at Siena was we had the right core.
The thing I got right in year two was I filled the spots I needed to fill.
So to me in year one you have to have a core.
Going into year two you have to have the right retention and then you have to fill the holes
where you missed, if you did.
So there's a lot of different ways you can build it.
That's how I got it right in the last one.
Hopefully I don't have to wait until year two to get it right.
The thing that I got right in year one, if you go back and look at our first group, 14
and 18, we lost so many games by one possession.
At one point we lost four games and missed 38 free throws.
Four out of five games and missed 38 free throws in those four losses that we lost by
a combined five points.
So the one thing I knew in year one is how competitive we were.
That there's going to be no sacrifice in that.
Our team is going to be competitive.
That has to be a non-negotiable for us.
And then through that you learn who you need to retain, how do you get it right, where
do you need to improve, and then you hopefully build it from there.
I know my team and we're going to have a really good core piece going into year two, but hopefully
I don't have to wait that long.
