Wow! Starship S40 Already Came Home Today after 2.5 Months…What Happens Next?
Wow! After more than two and a half months at sea, Starship S40 is finally coming home. The Starship that survived reentry after Flight 13 is now so close to Starbase, giving SpaceX a rare opportunity to closely inspect a flown vehicle and learn exactly how its hardware performed after an orbital mission and a long recovery at sea.
But S40’s return is only the beginning. What happens next could be just as important for Starship Flight 15, especially as SpaceX prepares S42 and Booster 22 for what could become the first attempt to catch the Ship. At the same time, S43 and Booster 23 are moving forward for the next generation of Starship missions, including the planned transition toward Florida launches.
In this video, we will answer:
Why is S40’s return so important?
What will SpaceX inspect on S40?
Could S40 be preserved instead of being cut apart?
How could S40’s data affect Starship Flight 15?
What are S42, B22, S43, and B23 preparing for?
When could Starship begin launching from Florida?
What happens next for Crew-12 and Dragon Freedom?

The return of S40 could provide valuable engineering data on the heat shield, engines, flaps, catch points, QD hardware, and internal systems. Whether SpaceX preserves S40 as an intact historical vehicle or cuts it apart for deeper analysis, its post-flight inspection could help shape the next phase of Starship development.
Meanwhile, SpaceX is building an increasingly large pipeline of Starship hardware. S40 is returning, S42 and B22 are preparing for Flight 15, S43 and B23 are moving toward future missions, and later vehicles are already entering production. That growing pipeline could be the foundation for the high-cadence Starship program SpaceX ultimately wants.
We’ll also cover the return of NASA’s Crew-12 aboard SpaceX’s Dragon Freedom after nearly 10 months in orbit, including the planned undocking, reentry, splashdown, and the crew’s work aboard the International Space Station.
