We Drank a $1,900 Wine for $300 in France 🇫🇷
We went to France for the wine trip of a lifetime.
From stepping inside Champagne Salon, one of the world’s most exclusive Champagne houses, to drinking rare Grand Cru Chablis in the place it was actually made, this episode is about what happens when you experience some of the world’s greatest wines in their motherland.
We travelled 25 hours by plane, two hours by train and another two and a half hours by car to get access to Salon, tasting Champagne in a place very few people will ever get to experience. It became one of the most emotional and memorable wine experiences we’ve ever had.
Then it was on to Chablis, standing amongst the Grand Cru vineyards of Le Clos and meeting the people actually making these wines. We explore why vineyards only metres apart can produce dramatically different wines, the differences between Petit Chablis, Chablis, Premier Cru and Grand Cru, and what a changing climate could mean for one of the world’s most famous Chardonnay regions.
And then there’s the wine…
A cult bottle that can cost around $1,900 back home, enjoyed for roughly $300 in France, plus the kind of Champagne that can command around $2,500 a bottle.
This isn’t just wine tasting. It’s access, history, terroir and the completely different experience of drinking legendary wine where it was born.
