Graf Zeppelin-Marsch (1903)
Dedication: Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin (1838-1917)

Regimental Band Of The Coldstream Guards conducted by Major Roger G. Swift

Carl Teike wrote his Graf Zeppelin March in 1903, originally titled March of the Teutons (Teutonenmarsch), and later dedicated to Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, the pioneering German airship designer.
The dedication came after the early successes of Zeppelin’s rigid airships, such as the LZ 1, and reflected the era’s fascination with technological innovation and national pride. Teike, a German military music composer, composed the march during his time as a police officer in Potsdam, drawing on his earlier experience as an oboist in a Prussian infantry regiment band.
The march became a staple of German martial music and was known by various titles internationally, including The Conqueror in the U.S. and March of the Air Fleet in Russia. It was even adopted as the Swedish Navy’s parade march until 1929.

Teike was born as the son of a master blacksmith in Altdamm near Szczecin. At the age of 14 he joined the city bandmaster of Wollin, Paul Böttcher, where he learned to play various wind instruments and performed in Böttcher's ensemble for four years, including in the seaside resort of Międzyzdroje. From 1883 he became oboist in the grenadier regiment "König Karl" (5th Württemberg) No. 123 in Ulm, where he composed his first marches, of which Alte Kameraden is the best known. After the end of his military service, he was first an employee of the city police of Ulm, then after 1895 a police officer in Potsdam. No longer fit for police service due to illness, he became a civil servant (district office assistant) in Landsberg an der Warthe in 1909. In addition to the march Alte Kameraden (Old Comrades), he composed more than 100 pieces of music, including the marches In Treue fest, Graf Zeppelin and Treue um Treue, as well as a number of dances.
