Eddy Verloes, a Belgian photographer, has won numerous awards for his literary symbolic photography.

The series “Losing our minds” captures the bizarre yet captivating period of the 2020 coronavirus crisis. During this time, fear and uncertainty overwhelm people, leading to introspection about the world and our relationship with Mother Nature. The crisis highlights humanity’s tendency to exploit the Earth, prompting a deeper reflection on our relationship with it.

In this poetic reflection, Verloes portrays young people seeking identity, life’s meaning, and human-nature connections. The surrealist series blurs realism and reality, prompting viewers to question the authenticity of the figures. This ambiguity mirrors the layman’s reaction to the crisis: is it reality or madness? The images feature ultra-Orthodox Jews finding freedom in unconventional ways amidst the lockdown.

Beyond anecdotal representation, Eddy’s images aim to be universal, transcending the Belgian coast where they were taken. The young people symbolize change, revolution, and resistance against societal norms, embodying spring’s renewal. “Einzelgänger” strive against society, some idealists fully committed. Their slogan emphasizes humanity’s social nature, finding strength in groups.

Ultimately, the series emphasizes humanity’s dependence on natural forces.
