2012

Laura Braun's The Weather was photographed in Portugal during 2008 following an invitation to undertake an artist's residency in Lisbon. Rather than documenting specific landmarks or producing a conventional travel project, Braun travelled across the country by car without a fixed itinerary, responding to places, changing weather conditions and chance encounters. Published by The Velvet Cell in association with Gasket Gallery in 2012, the book presents Portugal through a sequence of observations shaped by movement, atmosphere and time.

The photographs examine the relationship between landscape, architecture and everyday life, with weather acting as a unifying element throughout the project. Braun photographs coastal settlements, rural roads, forests, towns and isolated buildings, using shifting light, cloud, rain and mist to influence the appearance of each scene. Rather than presenting a descriptive survey of Portugal, the work considers how transient atmospheric conditions affect the way places are experienced and remembered.

Working with a measured documentary approach, Braun allows sequencing to establish visual connections between individual photographs, encouraging the viewer to read the book as a continuous journey rather than a collection of isolated images. The Weather reflects her interest in long term observation and the photobook as a narrative form, demonstrating how landscape photography can explore themes of movement, perception and place through careful editing and sustained visual research.
