Why This Fiery Chinese Fish Head Symbolizes Good Fortune

Chopped Chili Fish Head, or Duo Jiao Yu Tou (剁椒鱼头), is a famous dish from Hunan, China. A fish head is covered with chopped red chilies, then steamed until tender.
But this fiery dish is more than a meal.
According to a popular story, its origin goes back to the Qing Dynasty. A poor family offered shelter to a traveling scholar. Although they had very little, they welcomed him with a fish head steamed under homemade chopped chilies.
The dish also carries an auspicious meaning. In Chinese, the word for fish, “yu,” sounds the same as the word for surplus. Fish therefore represents abundance and having more than enough. Red symbolizes happiness, celebration, and good luck.
Together, they turn this Hunan classic into a wish for prosperity and good fortune.
Its exact origin is uncertain, but the story reflects an important part of Chinese food culture: even with very little, people still shared their best with a guest.
