Most urban homes try to open outward. Foundation F.L.O.D designed this contemporary Kerala courtyard home by turning everything inward instead.
The entire house grows from one architectural decision. Faced with a compact urban site and a brief that called for generous outdoor living, two independent homes, and the atmosphere of Mediterranean architecture, Foundation F.L.O.D organised every major space around a central courtyard. Rather than becoming leftover open space, the courtyard became the home's climate engine, drawing prevailing winds through brick jaali screens, softening tropical light with pergolas, and giving every room its own relationship with the landscape.
That same decision also solved the family's changing needs. The ground floor remains centred on the courtyard for everyday living, while the upper level enjoys broader views across the neighbourhood. A stair block accessible from both inside and outside allows the two homes to operate together or independently without changing how the architecture is experienced. Instead of adding separate buildings, the design creates flexibility through planning, preserving one coherent identity from the street while supporting multiple generations under one roof.
