The five times life almost ended | Eckhart Tolle

Life on this planet has been almost wiped out five times. Not diminished. Nearly ended. Volcanic winters, an asteroid, oceans losing their oxygen. Each time, the great majority of species disappeared, and each time, what remained eventually filled the world again with something new. Mammals only spread widely after the dinosaurs were gone, because until then there was no room for them to. Eckhart Tolle draws something from that sequence, and he is clear it is a reading rather than a finding. His suggestion is that each collapse was followed by a step upward in consciousness, as though catastrophe were part of how life develops rather than an interruption of it. He then applies the same lens to now. Humanity is facing a challenge unlike anything in its history, and his view is that a challenge of that size is exactly what forces a species to change. Not comfort. Difficulty. On the individual scale he says the same thing: adversity, met consciously rather than resisted, is what deepens a person. And the capacity for that is not reserved for anyone. Every human being carries it, whether or not this particular moment turns out to be the one that calls it out.
