From Happy Saturday to Happy Birthday — Dementia Confusion in Real Time

Divas and Dementia

Today’s visit with Mama was full of emotion and challenges — the reality of life with dementia. When I arrived, she was walking nonstop, full of energy but difficult to redirect.

Lately, I’ve noticed something new and concerning — she’s been holding her hands in a tight fist, even when nothing’s there. It makes feeding herself harder, so while I’m there, I help her open her hands and encourage small brain exercises to keep her active and engaged.

I asked her to say Happy Saturday, and each time she said Happy Birthday instead. That’s dementia — unpredictable, heartbreaking, and sometimes even sweet.

💜 Every visit is a reminder to stay patient, stay loving, and celebrate the moments that still shine through.
