Shaw Wildman (1900–1983) was a British photographer whose career developed from graphic design and advertising into commercial, documentary, and industrial photography. Born Alec Shaw Wildman in Lancashire, he initially trained outside photography before moving into design and visual communication. After working as an art director at J. Walter Thompson advertising agency, he established his own photographic studio in the 1920s, developing a style based on controlled lighting, precise composition, and carefully constructed images for commercial clients. His studio work covered advertising, portraiture, fashion, and industrial subjects, placing him among the British photographers who helped establish photography as a central element of twentieth century advertising.

During the Second World War, Wildman also produced documentary photographs commissioned through government and public organisations, recording aspects of British civilian life and wartime activity. The images from 1942 to 1944 show a different side of his practice from his studio and advertising work. His photographs of land workers at Mount Barton Farm in Devon in 1942 document agricultural labour and food production during wartime, while his 1943 photographs of Boy Scouts fruit picking in Cambridgeshire record organised youth involvement in seasonal agricultural work. In 1944, he photographed young hikers in Malham, Yorkshire, as part of the Youth Hostel Association’s wartime activities, showing outdoor education, travel, and recreation within the restrictions of wartime Britain. These photographs combine documentary observation with the same attention to composition and visual structure found throughout his commercial work.

Wildman continued working across advertising, portraiture, and photographic education after the war, contributing to the development of professional photography in Britain. He published and contributed to photographic literature, including Modern British Photographers (1948), and his work appeared in exhibitions and professional journals. The surviving archive, including his commercial commissions and wartime documentary photographs of farming, youth organisations, and rural communities, provides a record of British society during a period of industrial, agricultural, and social change. His wartime images, alongside his studio and advertising work, demonstrate the breadth of a career that moved between applied photography and documentary observation
