-Michael Fishbach and his family were enjoying a peaceful Valentine’s Day trip through the Sea of Cortez when they spotted a young humpback whale floating almost motionless at the surface. At first, they feared she was already dead—until she managed one desperate breath.

Looking beneath the water, Michael discovered the whale completely entangled in a massive commercial fishing net. With no rescue team nearby and only a small pocketknife available, he entered the water and began the dangerous process of cutting her free.

After approximately 45 minutes, the final strand came loose. Everyone expected the exhausted whale to disappear into the ocean—but instead, she turned back toward their boat and began an extraordinary hour-long display that none of them would ever forget.
