A rare and intimate moment off the shores of Maui, Hawaiʻi: a humpback whale mother rises vertically in the water and performs a spyhop while her calf looks on nearby.

Spyhopping is a behavior in which whales lift their heads above the surface, likely to visually observe their surroundings. In humpback whales, this behavior is sometimes seen in breeding and calving grounds, such as the warm, shallow waters surrounding Maui, which serve as a critical nursery area during the winter months.

Humpback whale mothers are highly protective and attentive to their calves, which remain close for their first year of life while learning essential behaviors, vocalizations, and migration routes.
