INSANE BATTLES EVERYWHERE | 2026 St. Mary's Trophy Part 1 | Goodwood Revival

We wait for the flag. Yeah, we do. A reminder then of your top ten. Alex Buncombe rounding out the top ten of the Morris Mini Cooper behind the Alfa Giulia of Robb. Half row six, we'll see two Alfa Giulias and the Ford Galaxy of Matt Neil in the middle. The second row, we'll see the two Cortina Mark 1s, Gordon Shedden and Tom Ingram. In your front row there, Romain Dumas on the far left, Frank Stibler in the middle. As we go foot to the floor and get the first race underway here at the 2026 Goodwood Revival. And immediately, Romain Dumas loses out to the Alfa Giulia. Frank Stibler down the inside as we head through magic. Jenson Button clinging on around the outside as Frank Stibler loses the rear. They bang wheels. Jenson Button's off into the grass. He manages to hold it, keeps his foot powered down but loses positions in doing so. And that melee has allowed our pole sitter, Romain Dumas in the Ford Galaxy to retake the lead. Yeah, and it was some oversteer from Stibler that caused that contact. And Jenson Button's dropped all the way down to the middle of the plaque. And actually, it was the Ford that had so much wheel spin off the line. And he's being chased down now by the 77. Yes, Gordon Shedden in the Cortina Mark 1 who's made up positions from fifth. He's managed to capitalise on Jenson Button and Frank Stibler's battle which is not over yet. Jenson Button will want to carve his way through the field now. Button is in the number four Cortina Mark 1. But out in front as they still jostle for positions there. A couple of the Cortinas getting close side by side as they make their way through the left-hand chick. Yeah, look at the growth from the Galaxy. It's gone up the road but it will have to brake much earlier than these lighter cars behind. They're all sort of sorting themselves out. There's Tom Ingram in the 172. Another one of our four Cortinas trying to brave it around the outside of Woodcut Corner. Thinking better of it, slotting in. And you can see the size difference as they filter through the chicane. The Cortinas, the big four Galaxy up front as it thunders down the straight. Well, this is where, of course, those big heavy V8 cars will have the advantage. Coming out of the chicane in a straight line. But then the corners come and the lighter, more nimble cars start to feed into action. 1.1 seconds to go between Romain Dumas who leads from Gordon Shedden. Frank Stibler stabilising in third. Having looked at one point that he was about to take the lead. Jenson Button has fallen all the way down to 11th place. He's outside of the top ten now. Having started in third. You just saw him there. We just snapped away from Button making his way through the field. His next target will be Andy Crio. Who is currently occupying 10th spot in this race in the Jaguar Mach 2. And he's done it already. Button through. Stibler with the headlights ablaze. Ready to try and attempt to chase down Romain Dumas. Button still trying to make his way further. If he's going to go down the inside at Lavant Corner. Past the number six. That's Tom Chilton who just about allows him room down the inside there. So Button's going to try and pick them off one by one. With his pace that he had. And of course it being Jenson Button. He should be able to find himself up at the top three. Don't want to jinx it. But he's got the pace as he's going to go past his good friend of Alex Buncombe in the Mini. Jenson Button fancying a fight back in a race. I reckon he's got that well within his remit. And he picks up Alex Buncombe and he's up into eighth spot. Meanwhile out in front Romain Dumas. Keeping that about one and a half. Just 1.7 second gap to Frank Stibler who's up to second now. Ahead of Gordon Shedd. And I think that might be flipping and flopping around as they slow down. Starts to concertina up out of the chicane. And here though further back in the pack as we see Jenson Button eyeing up Matt Neal. This is where Matt Neal's Galaxy will have the advantage in a straight line. That Cortina just not having the same amount of grunt. And that was Jenson Button. He had a peak going down into the chicane. But Matt Neal said no. Shut the door on him. And is he going to get the overlap? I don't think he is going to get the overlap. There's a bit of queue forming up behind Matt Neal at the moment. A hugely experienced, of course, touring car racer. Multiple touring car champion. And he knows how to defend. But will he be able to defend the light, more nimble car of Jenson Button? And you can see just the roll of that Galaxy. Maybe going a bit too deep there. For Matt Neal. And looking at Jenson Button. He's going to look to have the overlap. But he's not quite got enough grunt. Is he going to send one down the inside? He's having a look. No. Door shut once again by Matt Neal. Brave to do it there. But then the door opens up again. Is it a Cortina size shape down the inside? No. The track runs away from them. While they do battle though, that's brought Alex Buncombe back into the fray. And actually Tom Chilton's not too far away. Having made easy work of them for Jenson Button. Now finding himself stuck behind that big American V8 machine. In the hands of touring car ace Matt Neal in 7th. And the gap's starting to develop now. As we flip further up the order. The car in front here, the Cortina. That's Gordon Shedden being chased by Tom Ingram over 3rd and 4th. Yeah, battles we're used to seeing in British touring cars. So Shedden and Ingram know their strengths and weaknesses. But of course in totally different cars than they're used to. Ingram looking the much racier at the moment. With the one with the pace. Stippler though is the one with the overall pace. A couple of tenths quicker than Romain Dumas. That time around Jenson Button being able to get down the inside. Going down to 4th water. Matt Neal almost giving Jenson Button a wave. And he was giving Jenson Button a wave. And he's going to shut the door. Firmly shut in 4th water. Jenson Button's going to be getting frustrated with this. Oh, tries to tuck in. Get a little bit of tow if he can. He's bringing all the Cortinas behind him with him. And look at the gap ahead of Matt Neal. You can see how much of a road blob Matt Neal is becoming. For Jenson Button and the pack behind. Andrew Jordan is the next car up the road. Nearly 3.5 seconds clear. Jenson Button has to make quicker work of this. As he has a little look down the inside. The car shakes under braking. It's a late move. He's done it. Through goes Button on Neal. But is he going to be able to keep it with the grunts that this Ford has got? Ah, Bunker's helping it out. Bunker's almost blocking the road to try and help his mate. Good friends, those two. Good friends. Alex Buncombe and Jenson Button grew up together. The Buncombe's along with Jenson. And he's back through, though. Alex Buncombe's heroics didn't work. But late on the brakes from Jenson Button. Nice move to retake 7th place. Yeah, just about holds it. Bunker's going to try and go down the inside. A little mini through. Lovely move by Alex Buncombe. This is top, top stuff from the Goodwood Revival. This is the St. Mary's trophy. This is only part one. These incredible 50s saloon cars racing it out touring car style will have part two throughout the course of the weekend. And the overall winner will be the aggregate of both. Two cars and two drivers per car in this one. The pro drivers out there now. From pole position having lost it initially. But managing to retake it with Frank Stippler and Jenson Button doing battle into Madrid. Romain Dumas in the fourth galaxy is pulling away out in front by two and a half seconds. Second place, though. Looks like there could be a battle brewing there. Gordon Shedd and Tom Ingram are still doing battle over third and fourth. But they're not far behind the second place man in the alpha. I'm not sure what's happened to Frank Stippler because he lost over a second last time round. He was in the 130s. He's now in the 131. So I hope he's not got some kind of issue or whether it was a mistake along the line. But out front, Romain Dumas in the fastest first sector of anybody and looks pretty much in control. But as you said, Harry, still Tom Ingram trying to desperately find a way past Gordon Shedden. The Marcel Fassler car has just got himself up into the top ten. Shedden's gone wide. Slide, though, over the final podium. Places the 77 Cortina of Gordon Shedden ahead of the 172 of Tom Ingram. This is British touring car rivalry reignited here at the Goodwood Revival. 2.3 is the gap now up front. Romain Dumas steals fastest lap of the race off Frank Stippler. Only behind tenth of a second. And it must have been a mistake from Stippler because he's back into the 130s now. So he's just starting to edge away from this third place battle of Shedden and Ingram. And further back, Button is fully past now. Matt Neil wasn't able to come back past him. And Alex Buncombe is doing a good job by holding off Matt Neil as well. Yeah, we'll keep an eye on Jenson Button and see how quickly he can catch up to the back of Andrew Jordan's Alfa Romeo in sixth place at the moment. And then Button's well and truly in the fight with the Alfas, which are battling here. Robb Hough in fifth ahead of Andrew Jordan. They've just lost a bit of ground in the last lap or so to third and fourth, Gordon Shedden and Tom Ingram in their Cortinas. So it is Cortina and Cortina, an Alfa and Alfa two by two outside of the top two places in this race. Yeah, and it's a battle of the Alfas. It's got spots of rain, possibly very light on the camera lens there. But these two Alfa Romeos battling out again. Stars of Touring Car, Robb Hough and Andrew Jordan. And we're going to catch a replay of the start. Look at the Ford. Just going to be too much wheel spin. Maybe too much of a drop of the clutch. Too eager there from Romain Dumas. And then look at the Alfas. Going to get a kick of oversteer there. Make light contact. Only light contact with Jenson Button. But that was enough, Harry, to send Jenson off onto the grass. And I'll tell you what, he held it beautifully, did Jenson Button. But then he was just a passenger sinking back into the pack. Yeah, it was great car control, though, from Button in the early stages. Great start for Tom Ingram in the second row, along with Gordon Shennan. The two Cortinas that are still doing battle third and fourth. And we join them now. This is as close as Tom Ingram has looked to the back of Gordon Shennan in a little while. The same, too, for Andrew Jordan on the back of Robb Hough. The two Alfas in the back of screen. The two Cortinas coming through your screen now. Third, fourth, fifth and sixth. Still to be decided. Still, as we've done six laps, we've still got 15 minutes remaining. Yes, we have the Cortinas playing with the grass on the exit of St Mary's, and you're brave to do that. So we've got several battles. Lotteroo, by the way, has just made a place up into 13th place. And another one of our Alfas, he's just got past Adam Morgan in the Morris Mini Cooper S. So there are battles raging further down. Jenson Button having a look. He's getting ever so closer to Andrew Jordan, but maybe not at the rate of knots that he would like, Harry. No, last lap around for Jenson Button. About three, four tenths quicker than Andrew Jordan. He'll want to try and find a little bit more pace there. I think, though, just trying to manage that race, having lost a lot of ground at the start. But what will help him is the fact that there's been no movement yet between these two Cortinas and two Alfas that are fighting over second, third, third, fourth, fifth and sixth. That is his main fight. Although, as I say that, Tom Ingram now ahead of Gordon Shedden. Third and fourth. Frank Stippler very much on his own in second. With Romain Dumas out in front in that Ford Galaxy. The gap, two seconds clear. So let's see now if Tom Ingram, he's got a bit of clean air in front of him because the gap between himself and Stippler is 3.3 seconds. So let's see if he can close that down and possibly challenge for second place. But I think for Jenson Button, as we're looking at battle of the minis. Slightly further down. That's quite a great shot we've got there of them going through. But Jenson Button, I think ultimately just lost too much time up behind Matt Neal, which has then dropped in back. But he is closing that gap slowly. 3.7 between himself and Andrew Jordan. Yeah, nice little battle. Brewing further back in the pack. Greg Murphy in the number two at the rear of the field. That's Patrick Watts making their way through with just under 13 minutes. These guys towards the back of the pack. I think Tony Jardim as well is in this fight. He is. And he's just won this fight. He's in the 55. This is 25th, 26th and 27th. But it doesn't matter. It's excellent racing. And they're not giving up a single inch of track. Door to door stuff. Yeah. And if you want to look at the battle at the front, it's closed down by a tenth of a second. Stittford's just set the fastest lap of the race. And I think it's going to be hard for Tom Ingram to catch him. Seven tenths was the... Actually, no. One second was the difference in pace. But potentially, we've still got 12 minutes of this race remaining. And I'm just looking at the tracker, Harry. I think in the next lap or two, our leaders are going to come across some of the back markers. And we have seen how that can change results in the past. Yeah, traffic can be a real issue. Tom Chilton's gone back up into the top ten, by the way, in place of Marcel Vassler, who's lost a position. Andre Lotterer now all over the back of his sports car colleague outside of the top ten position. Still Roman Dumas actually extended his lead now to two and a half seconds. Frank Stiffler in second. Tom Ingram third. Gordon Shedden fourth. Robb Huff now ahead of Andrew Jordan. And this is Tony Jardim deciding he wanted to take a bit of the bit of the brake board home with him. Yeah. He's definitely going to do that. He was trying to cut the track across there. Rallying history. Maybe didn't quite realise that he's actually the aim of this part of Revival is to keep it on the more grippier part of service. But they're having a great little battle further down the audit, even though it's down four. Where is it further down? It's over 25th position right now, which belongs to one car. It's a place is a place, isn't it? A place is a place. A place is a place as we start to get a battle brewing here in the mid pack. Tom Chilton's actually just got up into ninth ahead of Marcel Basler. So somebody's lost a few positions in the top ten. Matt Neil is currently being the blocker in the Ford Galaxy. Hammington Cross sheds the button for as long as he could. He's now got chopping and changing Cortinas and Alphas all behind him for the lower end of the top ten. Matt Neil holding eighth. Tom Chilton now at ninth. Andre Lotterer's next inside the top ten. No, Marcel Basler decides he wants out. Another crack at it. Another personal best up front for Frank Stippler. I think soon they get the likes of Dumas and Stippler are going to come across the likes of Jimmy Johnson and Helio Castaneves, which are final runners down in 29th and 28th. Tony Jardim has got back through and just manages to hold off Patrick Rox. He's looming large in the mirrors as well. Oh, Buncombe. And just about managing to hold it. Rattling themselves over the kerbs and a bit of towing going. Oh, is he going to squeeze him? Yes, he does. A bit of feisty stuff from Tony Jardim. Oh, didn't quite see how that was going to end. Back up front though, Romain Dumas is the second car in picture and your race leader making his way through. And that is Frank Stippler who, while the gap still stands about two and a half seconds, let's see what it is as he crosses the line because he looks closer than he has been. And last lap around the Romain Dumas setting his fastest lap of the race so far. Dumas has got pace and he's a tenth quicker than Stippler right now. The Ford Galaxy and they're on board with the Frenchman is managing this race nicely. He knows he's there. He's having a look in his rear view mirror. Of course, they're going to have the pit boards hanging out over the pit wall to keep the drivers up to date. And, of course, you can't miss Stippler. He's got his headlights on as well. But he's actually timed that perfectly. He's managed to clear the Alfa of Johnson. Next up for these is going to be Castaneves who is about five seconds down the road from Johnson. So probably the next lap round, which is where they'll have to find their way past Castaneves. Having a look at André Lotterer there who started this race down in 15th is on the back of this gaggle. It's chasing Matt Neil's eighth spot. André Lotterer now up to tenth, just behind Tom Chilton is doing battle in one of the minis. It's the 76 car, which is just taking a huge bit of curb there. Single file through the right-hander André Lotterer again, still right on the back of Tom Chilton, still right on the back of Matt Neil. They're being chased by Marcel Vanzler. It was Alex Buncombe who was the one who took that bit of curbing. Andrew Jordan looks like he's gotten himself up into fifth spot ahead of Gordon Shedden. Jenson Button hasn't been able to reel them in as quickly as I think he might have liked. About three seconds adrift from Gordon Shedden's sixth place at the moment. The Alfa Romeo ahead still of the Cortina, but Jordan's Alfa Romeo now behind Rob Huff. Yeah, so we're going to catch a replay possibly, but what's happened? Gordon Shedden going through. He's just going to run out onto the grass. A small mistake, a kick of oversteering. Off he went, and that's where he's lost those couple of positions. And actually, Andrew Jordan's at the fastest final sector of anyone. So he still has some pace in his Alfa Romeo. The back out front is close. Stiffness still doing personal best, whereas Dumas at the moment, not so much. And let's see if they've cleared the traffic of Cash Neves, which I think that they have. So next up, they're going to approach our lovely mini battle, which is Murphy, Jardim and Watts. And of course, they're having their own battle, but I'm sure they're quite quickly realised that it's going to be the leaders approaching as they're just heading down now into Laban. There we go then, on cue. This is that battle further back in the pack. At the moment, it is Murphy, who's now got ahead of both Watts and Jardim, has fallen to the back of this gaggle of three minis, making their way across the start line now. Just over six and a half minutes to run of this race. 11 laps done by our leader, Romain Dumas, who leads by, well, less than two seconds now. Frank Stippler's picked up the pace up front. 1.7 seconds now, the gap. Stippler setting his fastest lap last time around. Yeah, so he's getting there. And I have heard from speaking to a couple of drivers, the heavier the old machine, the more grunt it has. The rear tyres don't necessarily like it and they can overheat. So I wonder, it's either Romain Dumas just managing the situation, managing his tyres, with six minutes remaining, or possibly he is just striving for a little bit of grip. But there's our mini battle. They've pulled them a lot quicker than they thought they would do. So the minis are still continuing the battle on and they're going to have a big, full galaxy trying to navigate the way around. And I'm sure Stippler's there saying, go on, just hold Romain up, just a little bit. Andrew Jordan's caught back up to Rob Huff over fourth and fifth. The two alphas resuming battle and they've got a bit of traffic in there as well. Avelio Castroneves in the Alfa Giulia, which gets nicely out of the way. Allows the two alphas through, fighting for fourth and fifth. Good exit from the 2.14. That's Andrew Jordan gets right tucked up underneath the boots of Rob Huff, who says no. And here's the traffic that Romain Dumas was going to have to navigate. And now Frank Stippler picks off Tony Jardim coming into the chicane. Two more cars to pick off though. Should be able to blast past them. It's going to be tight. Yes, it is. I think there was a bit of a hand gesture there from Murphy saying, look, that's passed to the side of me. I can see your bright light, Stippler. And having it at 1.4 is the gap now as they go across the line. So he's drawing ever closer to the back of Romain Dumas. Huff and Jordan still nose to tail following through in magic fourth and fifth. Tom Ingram kind of in no man's land in third. Eight seconds of race, but three seconds up the road. Gordon Shedden falling to sixth. Jenson Button, though, has closed that gap to sixth place. Jenson Button could snatch sixth position here. He's just another two seconds away. Matt Neil still doing a great job in keeping that Galaxy in eighth place. Really proving a blockade for the Cortinas behind him. Tom Chilton in the number six. And indeed, Andre Lotterer in his Alfa Romeo, rounding out the top ten. The only personal best that Stippler has set on this lap is through the speed traps. Now you could probably guess why. He's tucked in the toe of the much bigger Ford and he's actually just set the fastest middle sector of anyone. Okay, it's only a tenth of a second quicker and you could just see the braking performance there perfectly. How much he can close it down into good corner. It's going to be close. The closest it's been for a long while. Yeah, you could just see how much the gap comes down. But this is where it swings back in favor of the Galaxy down the start finish straight towards Madrid we go. The gap though as we cross the line for lap 14 under a second. First time we've seen that since the start of the race. In the last three and a half minutes the battle for victory of the St. Mary's Trophy Part 1 is very much on. It certainly is. And Frank Stippler is going to hope there's going to be more traffic possibly for them to come up against. Obviously if it's not in his favor he's going to be hoping not but they have got I'm trying to think that's the 14 Buncombe car which is the BMW just in front of them and then in front of them that is our very own Mr. Chandhok in the Austin Mini so he's slightly further down the road so traffic again could still come into play and it's a Dumant has responded though he has just set an absolutely electric first sector which is around about half a second quicker of that of Frank Stippler. These two Alfa Romeo's absolutely glued to each other. All it takes is one mistake but that's hard to find if you're Rob Hough or Andrew Jordan and I tell you what Gordon Shedden's right in this fight as well he's caught up to the back room as they head through the left-hand kink feels like good momentum for Andrew Jordan but he's just been glued there he's going to now though have to be careful and start looking in his mirrors because Gordon Shedden's Cortina is right there carrying so much speed Andrew Jordan almost pushing Rob Hough out of the corner but now traffic is going to play its part again It is and I wonder if they're just going to catch this Mini or maybe Shedden might just catch the Mini as they go into Turn 1 No, actually so they are going to catch it into Turn 1 and then down the inside Rob Hough says I'm sending it down the inside whether you like it or not Jordan not able and he's going to have to patiently wait to the exit that's finding a little time that's giving a bit of time to Hough actually maybe not as much as I thought No, Jardim to be fair I think he stuck a hand out and said what he was doing but that has given Rob Hough a momentary respite but not for Andrew Jordan who's now got Gordon Shedden down the inside leads on the brakes it's door to door the Alpha holds it from the Cortina Yeah, not able to do so and they said very strong is Andrew Jordan through this section of circuit again the mini battle is spread out a little bit so we've got two slightly further up the roads they're going to have to settle in as they go through lap and corner and then hope that they're going to have the grunt which they should do on the two minis as they go down the back straight towards Woodcook Corner Gap out in front though has gone up to a second despite Stiffler setting his fastest lap last time around as he gets a little bit wobbly he really closes up the gap this is the battle for the win as we'll cross the line and start what should be the final lap with Romain Dumas is from Pole Ford Galaxy holding on to the lead and just able to have that straight line advantage Stiffler can do nothing but see it pull away but he catches up in the corners this is going to come all the way down to the chequered flag Tom Ingram looks like he's holding on to third he's made it his own but the fourth and fifth place positions still very much up for grabs here two Alphas fighting it out with the Cortina behind and Jenson Button now is starting to make his Cortina known having lost ground at the start of this race qualified third yeah and our battle out front they're going to catch James Dorlin in the Jaguar Mark 2 so could James Dorlin have an effect during this race or will he be able to to get out of the way Tom Chilton I'm just noticing is dropping down the order so he's lost some places last time round but as you said this final battle spot for fourth is really heating up Alpha Cortina all vying for the same stretch of road here on the Goodwood Motor Circuit at the 2026 Goodwood Revival the St. Mary's Trophy Part 1 coming alive and it's a four-way fight now Jenson Button joins them and the first mistake we've seen from Rob Huff little bit of a lock-up on the front right that is all Andrew Jordan needs to see but they're running out of corners and they are running out of time the clock has counted down to zero the gap between the top two has now gone above a second and for Romain Dumas he will see the chequered flag first and wins St. Mary's Trophy Part 1 Stippler in second Ingram will finish third but how will this end the two Alphas trying to kick each other off the road and Andrew Jordan making his way through Rob Huff in the 36th losing ground right at the very end of the close of this race and meanwhile the Cortina comes through as well and Jenson Button fighting his way up into sixth Rob Huff denied at the line Andrew Jordan nicks it for fourth Jenson Button recovers to sixth just ahead of Gordon Shedden with Matt Neal providing an excellent blockade all race long to Alex Buncombe and Andre Lotterer who round out the top ten
