The Battle of Marathon: How 10,000 Greeks Defeated an Empire #battleofmarathon #ancientgreece #persianempire
In 490 BC, the massive Persian Empire under King Darius I set out to crush the young Greek democracy of Athens. Facing an invading force of up to 30,000 men, 10,000 Athenian hoplites and 1,000 volunteers from Plataea stood alone on the plain of Marathon after Spartan reinforcements were delayed by a religious festival.
General Miltiades, who previously served under Persian rule, used his knowledge of enemy tactics to create a brilliant plan. He intentionally weakened the Greek center, reinforced both flanks, and ordered a full-speed charge across open ground. The Greek forces trapped and encircled the enemy army, winning a decisive victory that killed over 6,000 invaders while losing only 192 men.
After the battle, the exhausted Greek troops completed a 42-kilometer force march back to Athens to stop a surprise naval strike, forcing the remaining Persian fleet to retreat.
