Well, the big headline of the day came from the women in blue, the cricket champions of Asia.
Once again, Harmanpreet Kaur and her women have won a record eighth Asia Cup title after a thumping
72-run victory over Sri Lanka and Dubai. But take a look at the pictures from after the finals.
There is something rather unusual about India's celebration. There are medals,
smiles, photographs and flags, but there is no trophy in the hands of the champions.
And that's because for the second time in two Asia Cups, Indian team has refused to accept
the trophy from the ACC chief, PCB boss and India-hating Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin
Naqvi. So what happens to the cup? Well, fans think that this is a redux of Pakistan's cup
moment. And that's why after Naqvi faced team India's snub, he faced these taunts from the fans.
Take a look at this video. Now, there's an important new detail that changes how we look
at this entire 40-minute drama that unfolded after the match. India's decision was not taken
on the spur of the moment. It was a call made by Harmanpreet Kaur or her teammates after they
walked off the field. The BCCI says the stand has been decided beforehand. So they knew that the
Indian team would not accept the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi, a stand that is consistent with
the position that has been taken by the men's team as well. You remember 2025 as well what had
happened. And yet Mohsin Naqvi kept his ego above the spirit of the game. So let's talk about
India's stand over the trophy and what it has been consistently. Before that, listen into this
reaction. That stand has been taken by BCCI and we stand by it. And look, for us, this tournament
is over. We are the champions. That's good enough. It was on the big board that India champions of
Asia Cup 2026. And this tournament is over, officially over for us. We're happy that we've
turned out to be champions. Now we look forward to the Asian Games.
So from the
men's final in 2025 to the women's final in 2026, the refusal to accept the cup from Naqvi
was followed by a delay in the presentation. Because you'd remember in 2025, the men's Asia Cup,
India beat Pakistan in the finals. And India had been very clear. We are not going to
accept the trophy from Naqvi. And the handover presentation had been delayed by over one hour
because Naqvi insisted on giving the prize or giving the cup. So India left without the trophy.
And then what happened now the women's Asia Cup as well where India beat Sri Lanka in the final.
The BCCI had alerted the ACC in advance. So they already knew about it. It's not like some last
minute change. India refused Naqvi yet again. And then the presentation was again delayed by 40
minutes. And India left without the trophy. So the BCCI is explicitly linking its position to
the deteriorating India-Pakistan relations after the Pehalgam terror attack. This wasn't even the
first warning. This is exactly the position that has been taken by the men in blue during the Asia
Cup in 2025. Let's also take a look closely at the videos that are being widely shared. On one side,
you see the Indian women's team waiting near the boundary after becoming Asian champions.
On the other side, you see Mohsin Naqvi is on the presenting stage. The ceremony proceeds in parts.
Sri Lanka received their runners-up honors. But when it comes to the champions and the trophy,
there is a standoff. Team India does not come forward to receive the cup from Naqvi. Now watch
the videos that are going viral on social media. And you can see that the Indian women's team
is on field during the presentation ceremony near the boundary. And Mohsin Naqvi is on the stage.
This is despite knowing India's position. He threw a tantrum, put his ego above the game
and insisted that he will present the trophy to the winning side. And the PCB boss and ACC chief,
who is also Pakistan's interior minister, a man who has spewed venom against India,
a man who is believed to be close to the Pakistan military establishment,
was snubbed once again on the cricket field. Watch these videos. Take a look at the body
language and expressions to know exactly what happened. These videos are going viral on social
media. The entire trophy controversy raising bigger questions though over the role of the ACC
and its leadership. Because if India's stand was known in advance, why did the standoff even
happen? So should the ICC now review Naqvi's role in Asian Cricket Council? Should the ICC
seek answers from ACC on the entire controversy? And will BCCI formally take the matter to the
ICC? Because ACC knew India's stand. So the question still remains, why didn't Naqvi just
step aside? Could an alternate presenter have ended this entire controversy? Mohsin Naqvi's
ego seemed to be bigger than our champions. And that's something that the ICC should take note of.
Team India had the right to draw a line with the PCB boss. The question is whether ACC could have
really avoided this entire controversy? Because now we've seen it happened two years in a row.
So two Asia Cups, two trophies, it's the same story. It's just the tantrum of Naqvi. The
trophy showdown though has also exposed a divide within the Congress party as well. Because while
Pawan Khaira appears to back this stand, saying that if cricket and terrorism cannot go together,
then the BCCI has done what it felt was right. Salman Khurshid sees the refusal as a very symbolic
gesture. A message that the cricketing body decided to send after careful consideration. But there's
another Congress leader, Vijay Veddatiwar, who's striking a different note. He argues that
hostile countries ultimately have to find a way to talk, pointing to dialogue amid differences at
BRICS. Sample these reactions.
So whatever they thought right, in their wisdom, they've done that.
With that, let's shift our attention. A common set of personal laws for every citizen,
irrespective of their religion. Well, that's a big promise that has been made by the government
on the Uniform Civil Code. Home Minister Amit Shah has now set a 2029 deadline for UCC,
saying the law will be implemented across all the 21 states governed by the BJP-led NDA.
From marriage and divorce to inheritance and adoption, UCC seeks to bring these personal
laws under one common framework. The Congress has called this an anti-Muslim move. But before
we take you through the politics of it, listen in to the big announcement that was made by the
Congress.
Now, this announcement has triggered a fresh political clash because the opposition
has targeted the BJP, Amit Shah in particular, for this deadline, alleging that the move is
less about legal reform and more about the BJP's communal and divisive politics. The Congress
leaders call the move anti-Muslim. Listen in.
What message do they want to give? They have an ideology. We cannot agree with that ideology.
And we believe that the constitution needs to be understood.
Anyone can have an ideology, but it cannot be different from the constitution.
Now, whatever they have done, wherever they have done it, in Uttarakhand,
in other regions, and they want to do it in other regions, this will have to be tested first.
This is their agenda. But what will happen in Goa? Will they be able to do it in Goa?
Will they be able to do it in North East? No, they will not be able to do it.
There is a page of the law in that statement.
What I am saying is that you want to do the national self-service union agenda.
There should be a constitution in the country. There should be a law.
There is only one constitution in the country. The law should be one.
We all believe that there should be a law for everyone in the country.
But when you do politics about equal citizenship, then we will be against it.
Don't do politics for elections.
And even after doing this, Amit Shah will not become the Prime Minister of the country.
Ask him to have a 21-minute press conference first.
Now the BJP has pushed back saying the UCC is about one common legal framework and social reform
and not religious politics. Listen in.
To make the UCC, the Maharashtra government has already prepared a committee.
The committee is working.
And I believe that soon after the report of the committee comes, we will act on it.
One country, one law. This is the resolution.
And that resolution is going to be fulfilled under the leadership of the Prime Minister of the country.
This is what the Home Minister of the country said.
These are the people.
Nehru imposed Section 370.
Nehru imposed Section 35A.
And he used to say,
no one has the courage to remove it.
Not a drop of blood fell.
Amit Bhai was right.
And 35A was also removed.
Section 370 was also removed.
Today, one country, one law.
From Kashmir, Kanyakumari is one.
If these people are able to vote,
then they can negotiate with Pakistan.
And then registration of marriage becomes mandatory for all.
There will also be uniform laws for divorce across religions.
And a complete ban on polygamy.
The abolition of Halala and Eidat as well.
Some of the regressive practices.
And equal inheritance rights for men and women.
What happens currently though,
is that Muslim women can marry at 50 years.
In fact, puberty registration of marriages is not mandatory.
And Talaq and Khula provisions are still given in the Muslim law.
And up to 4 marriages are allowed for men.
If the UCC is not implemented in some of the states.
It has of course been implemented.
But there are many others where there is no UCC.
So these are the laws that exist.
Including difference in inheritance laws as well.
So the UCC is already a reality in several of the states.
Others have moved a step closer to the implementation.
This is where things stand as of now.
In Uttarakhand, it became of course the first state to enforce UCC.
In Gujarat as well, the UCC bill has been passed earlier this year.
And in Assam as well, it has been passed in May 2026.
And this is what was cited by the Union Home Minister when he said that
by 2029, most of the states or all the states governed by the NDA will have the UCC.
In Madhya Pradesh as well, the UCC bill has been passed.
It has been sent for presidential assent.
And so is the case with Chhattisgarh as well which has moved a step closer
with the UCC drafting committee that has been formed.
So for the UCC to be implemented in 21 BJP led NDA states,
the deadline that has been set is 2029.
With that we shift our attention now.
No end to the controversy around the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay's UK visit.
Because days after he flagged off a car racing event at Silverstone Circuit
and was seen with fellow actor and racer Ajit Kumar,
the DMK and the BJP continued to target him.
DMK leaders have questioned the Chief Minister's priorities,
asking whether the trip is meant to bring investments to Tamil Nadu
or serve as a high profile reunion at a racetrack.
Remember Trisha was also seen with Vijay in the event
and the DMK had criticised the TVK chief for the same.
The BJP has also now joined in with Nenar Nagendran asking
whether this was indeed a trip for investments
as has been claimed by the Tamil Nadu government
or whether it was a pleasure trip of the Chief Minister.
He had gone to London.
The only purpose is not bringing industries.
Just to flag off Ajit's vehicle in the car race.
So his main visit to London is not industrial development.
It is his friend's request.
Has he really met the investors for the revival?
Or not?
How many people can he meet in these 3-4 days?
This is a question mark.
He has to answer when it comes to that.
If it was a personal matter, I can't say anything.
But if his investors have gone for the revival,
he has to say who all he met and how much money is coming.
And I think to lie like this,
to make people fools like this is definitely wrong.
And the only event what we saw
that he was participating in Ajit's motor race
that was what with Mr. Arjuna and Ms. Trisha.
That's what we have seen.
I think Mr. Vijay could have very easily said
that he wanted a break after 100 days of his governance
and he wanted to have a pleasure trip.
Nobody is going to oppose it.
Why do you unnecessarily lie that you are going for an investors' meeting?
There are a host of meetings that are lined up.
These are ministerial and official meetings that are lined up.
That doesn't seem to be the case here.
Also going on to say that it looks like
CM Vijay left without much planning.
And mocking the TVK as well saying
it looks like they thought that if the CM is at the airport,
then investments will start pouring into Tamil Nadu.
And then also making a reference to this visit of Vijay to Ajit.
Going on to say that Vijay had actually gone to UK to meet Ajit
and not to attract investments.
Asking why did he even lie about his visit,
the purpose of his visit to UK.
This is the latest chapter in the personal attacks
against CM Vijay.
Remember Trisha has also been dragged into politics
on multiple occasions.
The Tamil Nadu government though has made it clear
that this is a trip to attract foreign investments,
strengthen ties with British companies
and study world class motorsport infrastructure.
The visit concludes on the 17th of September.
And well that's all we could bring for you
in this edition of Urban Debate.
Thank you for joining us.
Good night.
