Grand Manan Island | Exploring a Different Side of New Brunswick | RVing the Maritimes Ep 2

Is Grand Manan Island worth the ferry crossing? In Episode 2 of our Maritimes / Magdalen Islands / Gaspe RV adventure, we take the RV aboard the Grand Manan Adventure for the 32-km ferry ride from Blacks Harbour, New Brunswick, to one of the Bay of Fundy’s most distinctive island communities. Grand Manan feels different almost from the moment you arrive. This is still very much a working island, where fishing harbours, lobster boats, aquaculture and generations-old fishing traditions remain part of everyday life. Camping at The Anchorage Provincial Park, we spend several days exploring the island — from the historic herring smokehouses of Seal Cove and the dramatic cliffs at Southwest Head, to one of Grand Manan’s most recognizable landmarks, Swallowtail Lighthouse. We’ll also hike the rugged coastal trail to Hole in the Wall, explore some of the island’s working harbours and stop at Sunrise Seafoods for what ultimately proved to be our favourite lobster roll of the entire trip. Then we cross to Grand Manan’s wild western shore and descend into Dark Harbour, an extraordinary little community squeezed between towering cliffs and the Bay of Fundy. We’ll see its tidal shoreline road, colourful dories and a fascinating Atlantic salmon conservation project before finishing our visit back at The Anchorage. Along the way, we share practical information for anyone considering a visit, including Grand Manan ferry reservations, travelling with an RV, camping on Grand Manan and ferry facilities.
