The FAA has just published an updated Operations Plan Advisory indicating a primary launch date of Friday, September 18th for Starship’s debut orbital launch. Now, we will wonder: Are Starship's heat shield problems really solved? Are they ready to orbit?
So, what did SpaceX change on Ship 42 Heatshield after Ship 40's unexpected survival?
Why is SpaceX still continuing to upgrade Starship's heat shield, even after Elon Musk declared it a success?
As we know, Starship's recent flights have shown significant improvements, with the vehicle repeatedly making it through launch and successfully landing in the ocean. This has allowed us to see the condition of the heat-shield tiles after each flight.
The improvement is undeniable. The tiles are no longer suffering major failures, and the oxidation problem also appears to have been addressed.
That is why SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has made some extremely confident statements about the heat shield. Most recently, Musk spoke about it during an audio-only livestream.

Indeed, Ship 40 successfully splashed down after its most recent flight in late July. And remarkably, the spacecraft remained floating in the ocean for 24 days before it was finally lifted onto a recovery vessel.
According to Musk, both the available data and visual inspections suggest that SpaceX may have finally solved the heat-shield issue — a problem he had previously described as the single biggest challenge facing Starship.
His comments immediately after the flight were particularly confident. Musk said: “We got all the heat shield data we needed, and then some!” He also stated: “Latest heat shield design looks great” and explained: “This flight intentionally had much higher acceleration to test how well the heat shield tiles would remain attached at high dynamic pressure. Test was successful.”
Musk did acknowledge that the flight still involved some difficulties. But his overall conclusion was remarkably optimistic. During the webcast, he said: “But I would say that we do not see any technical obstacles at this point to achieving full and rapid reusability.”
That statement is especially significant when compared with Musk's earlier assessment of Starship's biggest remaining challenges. He had previously identified the heat shield and orbital refueling as the two major obstacles SpaceX still needed to overcome before Starship could truly become a multiplanetary spacecraft.
Now, based on the latest flight and the condition of Ship 40, Musk appears to believe that one of those two major obstacles is finally close to solved.
