Hello and welcome to Simply Cinema. We are your hosts Maximilian Simonelli and Dustin Braga.
So Dustin today we have a kind of a sad episode a little bit. We do, we do. As I'm sure all of
you have known we have lost three great legends. They always come in threes. They always do
unfortunately. Yeah. And these are some pretty heavy hitters. Yeah. This time around. We have
them seen here. First we lost Dolly Parton. A legend. Yeah legend, yes. Followed swiftly by
Tim Curry and last but not least Peter Cullen. Yes. Very sad. Yeah. These are all incredible
talents. Yes. All very well known and just these three combined it was, it was hard. Yeah it was.
It's sad. Yeah. You know but they left behind some good movies. They did, they did which
we will be going over today. Yes we will. And it's gonna be great. It is. We're gonna reminisce. Yeah.
And think of all the great work that these three lovely humans have done. Indeed, indeed. So what
we start right off with Dolly Parton. Let's do it. So the film we chose for her I mean kind of an
obvious choice. I was gonna say looking at her filmography you do also have films like
Steel Magnolias and you do also have a movie called Rhinestone which I think is kind of famous
for being as bad as it is you know. But the obvious choice for Dolly Parton was of course
9 to 5. Yes. And you know it's, it still holds up. It's still a funny film. Yeah. Yeah it really is.
It's great. You know and Billy Tomlin, Jane Fonda, of course Dolly Parton. Yes. Dabney Coleman. Yeah
just, just a funny film. Yeah it's a hysterical film. Yeah. Also a film with a great message
behind it too. Yeah you know it's definitely it's that's the one thing I say it holds up like it is
still funny but I'm watching it going this is it's definitely a product of its time you know
because I mean yes it is about like women standing up to the the sexist boss but the fact that like
it's so it was like so commonplace yeah you know like oh of course like you know he says a
misogynistic comment or you know he like you know grabs them as they're walking by it's like I'm
like that would you know would never get past today you know what I mean but the film was made
because it obviously spoke to a lot of women you know our secretaries at that time who like oh yeah
this happens yeah like all the time yeah I'm just treated as perfect of course yeah so the fact they
like they kidnap them and like they do kind of show him the error of his ways they do you know
through fear you know it's it's more so change or you gotta get in serious trouble yeah but it's
good yeah it's a it's a nice film and I and I think even more so to the point um I don't know
maybe getting a little deeper into it sure uh is I I think this film also kind of in a way represented
of what Dolly kind of stood for yes yes uh she was quite a force uh in equality and just treating
everyone fairly and equally yes regardless of gender creed color race religion she just all
that jazz yeah yeah she was just a force of good and and trying to have everyone treated fairly
and this movie is kind of a an extension of that more so obviously because women in the workplace
yeah it was not very good it is a lot better now yeah I mean we still have a lot of work to do
right but um notice how what you men hosting this show well I got work to do yeah I mean
I think it it speaks to that you know if we're we're recognizing the yes of course yes we are
yeah you get all that we recognize the problem we allies um yeah uh but I I think it does really
speak to Dolly and her ways and yeah and I think she was just you know that kind of force for good
well each character also so like each actress I should say perfectly represents the character
they're playing because like because Dolly is definitely like she's I'd say the most glamorous
of the bunch yes she's also the toughest of the bunch exactly well let me go back to it for a
minute to the image here there it is let me see like Lily Tomlin is definitely like
kind of gruff in the movie but Dolly is like the one like you believe like could you know like
hog tied like he's cattle you know what I mean and Jane Fonda is definitely the most uh
like I guess like the meekest of the bunch yeah you know but again that just shows that each
actress like you know reflects the character they're playing yeah you know yeah they do
comes on a good casting at the end oh yeah I mean it just the pairing of uh yeah uh Lily Tomlin and
Jane Fonda yeah alone is enough to you know get butts in seats um but add Dolly Parton to that and
they have themselves quite the trio yeah yeah yeah it's a sweet it's again it's a sweet little film
I said it again I think it is a product of its time but it is it the comedy still holds up like
it is you still watch it and you laugh yeah you know yeah it's uh it's a fantastic watch um I
think it's I think it is streaming somewhere I think Hulu and Disney plus yeah one is yeah yeah
uh so if you have those either of those go and watch it yeah it's it's very funny you know I'm
curious was this I'm curious if this was ever I don't know musical was high energy comedy stage
show featuring music and lyrics okay music and lyrics but Dolly Parton I was gonna say this
this film definitely not that I love seeing this when this happens but the number of movies that
have been subsequently turned into musicals oh yeah I would have been surprised if this one wasn't
like that yeah you know this totally lends itself to that like like that and the producers you know
it's in an office it's like supposed to be everyday people whimsical scenarios that kind
of stuff you know like I said like because way back when we saw that the Lost Boys became a
musical yeah so really interesting really interesting choice a lot of things that are
that you wouldn't think yeah a musical a teen vampire but for those of you don't know a teen
vampire movie as a musical it why not sure why not anything yeah exactly yeah but this one is so
the musical 9 to 5 the musical is a high energy comedy stage show featuring music and lyrics by
Dolly Parton yes wow and a book by Patricia Resnick based on the hit 1980 film so there you go
yeah I didn't even know but makes sense yeah like I said once we get uh what was it uh mostly
musicals we'll have to get that one yeah we'll have to start that too so we can do the musical
we'll cover it yeah best movie based on a musical based on a movie
nine to five yeah yeah uh uh but Dolly we'll miss you we will miss Dolly yeah all of her
roles and and and her work with country music yeah and she was Hollywood yes yes of course
she was also great too because like the number of like interviews you see her in over the years where
like she just like shakes off any I've never seen one I think I want to say it was Barbara Walters
okay interviewing her and it was just kind of like she's like I said don't you feel
not ashamed but like don't you just feel like you know like you're kind of just being treated like
for like a like a beauty queen or a glamour girl she's like no it doesn't bother me a bit she's
just like shaking it off like I'm not biting like I'm not you're not getting to me I'm like that's
that's how you do it yeah I like that yeah thanks again yeah yeah exactly yeah you gotta love it
yeah we will miss you Dolly we will now we're gonna shift gears a little bit yes yes and we're
gonna talk about uh another big love back to the image here just in case you forgot the order
Tim Curry Mr. Tim Curry yes who I gotta say right off the bat he is an actor that to me seems like
he just had fun with whatever the role was absolutely you know 100% first of all I found
out so he successful voice actor as well as as an on-screen actor I found out he was initially
offered the role of the Joker in the Batman animated series yes but then went out to it
went to Mark Hamill and then for live action he was considered to play Judge Doom in Who Framed
Roger Rabbit yeah before it went to Christopher Lloyd and they said he was a little too much
too much too much too theatrical yeah but again I mean a guy who plays Pennywise in the original
it yeah definitely scary absolutely but we want to talk about uh a couple a couple of our picks
couple of our picks so it was tough picking one for him but so we'll start with you Dustin you
so I picked uh the Wild Thornberrys scene here on the left which is an animated show
like this again you gotta love Getty Images yeah this was the best picture we could find
this was taken at the premiere of the Wild Thornberries movie um obviously Tim Curry uh
with an actual chimpanzee uh they're having a little uh little good time there yes
and uh but I think the Wild Thornberries is kind of it might be the first thing that I
I would recognize Tim Curry from yeah um this was a Nickelodeon animated series and he played
uh Nigel Thornberry yeah he had a very distinctive voice yeah he was kind of he was this professor of
of nature and biology yeah and um he moved his family to Africa in in a basically a giant van
and in a van down by the river and uh it was a lot of high drinks and
just really really funny stuff coming from Tim Curry uh the voice is so iconic that he does
I was watching part of it going okay a couple of times I go oh that isn't I can't even detect
that it's him and then a few few sentences or a few words he said I'm like oh yeah that's Tim
Curry yeah I can tell it's him oh yeah yeah the the Tim Curry voice will slip out every now and
then yeah but it's for me the Wild Thornberries is just a a wonderful show a really really fun
time and my most primary um memory of Tim Curry so this is what you go to when you think of him
yeah that's good that's sweet because I was thinking too I'll explain the the picture on
the right in a moment back to us I was thinking recently again personal opinion yeah but he's got
two prime examples of what most people would say is his best work I think he's really good in the
film yeah the film itself is okay so I already mentioned it I personally thought the remake
was better I think he's a very good Pennywise the film I think is is fine it's okay the other
example again he's phenomenal he's the whole movie is the Rocky Horror Picture Show oh yeah
which I go all right it's funny because it is you know it's poking fun at like old monster movies so
I did like what it was trying to do and you know he plays the the transsexual transvestite of
Transylvania yeah and he just he gives it his all so I said he's really good I saw the film and I
was like all right that was that was fine it was okay yeah anyway a film I always think of when I
think of Tim Curry let's go back to it again gotta love Getty Images scene here so picture on the
right is an actual painting of Cardinal Richelieu which I actually saw a few months ago when I was
in London let me see it is in the National Gallery in the London House and the reason I've included
it is because what I think of for Tim Curry is a little film called the Three Musketeers
from 1993 starring Kiefer Sutherland, Chris O'Donnell, Charlie Sheen, Oliver Platt, Rebecca
DeMornay and of course Tim Curry as like the evil Cardinal again I wish we had an actual picture of
him in the movie but he's I feel like he really walks the line between like a cartoon villain but
also like a good serious villain like it's not too over the top yeah it's not too just like you
know twirling the handlebar mustache you know laughing at the lady being tied to the railroad
tracks you know it's not that type of villain no he does exactly doesn't give his all in this one
for absolute sure and man I did see this movie I want to say for the first time because I don't
remember seeing it previously really yeah so I had a much different experience I got you and
maybe a primitive one or primary one right and you know what we'll get into my thoughts of this
okay when we come back from a break oh the suspense is killing me then I hope it'll last
stay tuned and welcome back hey so before we took a break we were looking at we had covered
Dolly Parton we were covering Tim Curry Dustin you were going to give us your thoughts on the
Three Musketeers film which you saw very recently I did let's go back to the image
uh yes so I like I said saw this movie for the first time and I think I liked it okay
interesting okay here's the thing is that you know it's Three Musketeers takes place in the French
yes countryside so we have a mix of English yeah we have we do have some French people in there
yeah um and then no one's doing a French accent no and then our main musketeers are all American
yeah yeah not putting on any sort of accent that's true and it's just so jarring to me I will give
you that the funny thing is about that is that like I said there's other films where like we
just saw The Odyssey yes you know does anyone sound greek in that movie I mean you know what
I mean yeah like you know you're watching that's why I feel like there's this unwritten rule where
like we talked about Red October a while ago does Sean Connery sound Russian does anyone sound
Russian on that boat no no there was one film I think we talked about it way back when there was a
part uh miniseries uh part one and part two of Frankenstein which I'll get into just just a
little bit no one in that film sounds Swiss no you know but uh William Hurt who plays uh Dr.
Valdman in the film is like doing a Swiss he's not German he's not Swiss he's doing a Swiss German
accent you know something along those lines and it's kind of I go well why do you sound like the
one guy who's like who's trying exactly so I feel like there is this unwritten rule that it's like
don't do a voice just just show up and you know do your thing exactly especially like when it's
because it is a musketeers is like a Disney film yeah so it is kind of like yeah okay this isn't
gonna be 100% accurate you know what I mean so like I said I just feel like there was that
unwritten rule of like again this just goes into affirmative action like these people should play
these parts yes because they're the ones who are best suited to play said parts okay so it makes
sense yeah yeah yeah I guess I'll give it to you but I agree yeah they all sound they sound English
and American and no they sound anything but French yeah except for that except for one girl uh uh
played by Julie Dibley uh yeah yeah she I forget what her character's name was Julie Finder where
are you Julie oh Constance yes yeah I got you yeah yeah um I know I recognized her from the uh
from the before trilogy right right yeah and she probably has the least amount of screen time
yeah and the least amount of dialogue yeah she's the only actual French actress and give her the
least in that whole entire thing yeah um but as for Tim Curry yes yes uh the man of the hour the
he he was great yeah um I was definitely getting menaced from this guy um he can play it up like
nobody can yeah um I think that all has to do with his theater training yes because he was uh
basically he was a theater actor before he went into film right uh with his first film being
uh so I think he definitely leads into his more theatrical presence and it works out very well
for him yeah but he again he struck me as like an actor who didn't have like an ego yeah because
again I think like he took he'd like whatever the role was he went into it and gave it his
all regardless of how how serious or how silly or how big or small the part was sure I mean
it's like I said I see this film and I go it is it's a little bit of like he's a sort of a
cartoony villain but I also think he is he's just enough of like a serious villain yeah you know
so that's why that's that was my takeaway that's why I remember this one fondly they have also I'm
sorry and also because as I said way back when we were I was watching a list of his top 10
performances you know they had they had Muppet Treasure Island he's phenomenal and that they
had Rocky Horror they had it they didn't have this movie I'm like come on no love for Cardinal
Richelieu come on he was a great villain in this film anyhow no love yeah no love no love for the
no respect but if you can watch the film because I it's it's my favorite version of the Musketeers
film even though there's been many it's another film that we talked about way back when that it
keeps getting I don't know if we mentioned it it keeps getting remade yes you know there's always
every like 10 to 20 years there's a new one yeah yeah so it's only a matter of time now right it's
true but anyway thanks Tim Curry for being in my favorite version thank you Tim yeah yeah and uh
one thing I do have to note that I actually showed you last week and that is uh oh yeah so Tim Curry
as we mentioned did voice roles and sometimes he did video games as well yeah and in one video
game called uh Command and Conquer Red Alert um he it's a live action role and a voiceover role
but his live action bits are he he was given the script but not the entire script okay so he's
reading most of his lines for the very first time yeah off of like cue cards cue cards and I you
have to look it up just search on YouTube just Command and Conquer Tim Curry yeah and you're
gonna see a nice little um a nice edited yep uh video of every single time Tim Curry's on camera
and he looks like he is trying so hard fighting for his life to not burst out laughing because
he showed it to me and I was like oh this is because again he's giving it his all he's like
you know trying to be like this evil again kind of cartoony villain yeah but reading the dialogue
and realizing like oh no I'm about to say this it's like okay hold it hold it together and it's
hilarious but again it shows it shows he was having a good time yes you know Tim Curry just
gave it his all yeah no matter what role he did yeah and we love that whether he was trying to
stop Kermit the Frog or Kevin McAllister exactly Tim we will miss you yeah well let's take a quick
break okay and then we'll come back with our final tribute final salute stay tuned and welcome back
so uh we've covered Dolly Parton we've covered Tim Curry last person on our list to cover is the
late great Peter Cullen so a man who's definitely more you know known as a voice actor oh yes yes
but he left his mark on the voice acting world absolutely his you know his biggest claim to
fame the thing that he will always be fondly remembered for is we have a picture of him here
sort of a picture is Optimus Prime from the Transformers yes and again just a great voice
he really gives the role his all he does yeah um even if it's a Michael Bay franchise
he he does have this big booming commanding voice yes yes um that he actually got from his brother
okay so how the story goes is that he because his brother was in the military he was a very
very stoic guy okay um he also had like this really like like deep commanding voice okay and
so for Optimus Prime he was trying to incorporate that okay so he was doing an impression of his
brother interesting as you know for Optimus Prime that's nice yeah it worked it yes yeah and um
yeah it's it's obviously got him a whole career yeah I was gonna say so if he's trying to
impersonate his brother for Optimus Prime who's he trying to impersonate for Eeyore in Winnie the
was also the voice of Eeyore ladies and gentlemen so very very you know diverse uh range of roles
you got Optimus Prime and Eeyore yeah um for Eeyore I think he was just trying to do like a
sad guy yeah it was just sad guy because he wasn't the first voice actor for Eeyore oh okay I didn't
know uh but um he was one of the main ones um but he uh he he did definitely give that sad
exactly hooray for me hooray for me yeah I found out recently he was also uncredited
he was the voice of Predator yes in the original Predator film yes and I heard that he like he got
the role because he auditioned like when he had just finished doing voice work for another film
and his he was like coughing up blood because his throat was so sore so he like kind of came
up with like the growls and the snarls and like the you know I go how do you not credit the guy
for that I know the voice of Predator come on it's wild yeah uh yeah he's he's done so much
stuff yeah he's also the narrator of Voltron yes yes and he does a lot of pro did a lot of
promo work for Cartoon Network and Toonami nice um but yeah he's he's had such an extensive career
it's also in Treasure Planet I see yes he he did a lot of stuff with uh with his uh friend
Frank Welker uh who's also a very famous voice actor um they did a lot of stuff in the 80s and
90s yeah but uh that's why I'm looking at his filmography it's it's like every other every
Transformers Winnie the Pooh Transformers Winnie the Pooh and then one thing that's
not either of those things right yeah oh Gremlins yeah a little bit of Gremlins too
a little bit of Gremlin just for good measure yeah but yeah definitely one of the one of the
most famous voice actors I would say so you know yeah and sadly is no more sadly is not
but he will be truly missed um he does have his uh final time as playing Optimus coming up
see I like that yeah yeah um it's going to be a short film okay playing at the end of the uh 40th
anniversary showings of Transformers the movie nice nice I like that that's cool yeah so uh
I'm definitely going to be seeing that it's sweet when they it's sweet when they that that becomes
it's become I think more of a common thing where like the last thing that an actor was working on
you know before their passing like it does get finished you know with the permission of the
family or the estate whatever and and it's like okay this is their last little salute you know
like Rob Reiner was recently in uh oh I forget the name of the show but he was like he was in
this show I think it was a Larry David product project rather and it was like well we filmed
it before his passing we finished it after his passing so it's like a last a last goodbye yeah
you know it's sweet when that that they can make that work exactly it's it's one one final ride
exactly yeah yeah yeah yeah that's sweet yeah it's it's going to be bittersweet we may cry
tears in theater but uh but yeah Peter Cullen absolutely will be missed as we'll all through
them we once again after Dolly Parton Tim Curry and Peter Cullen yes three great legends that are
sadly no more yes but we do thank them for all of their hard work and dedication yeah and uh just
joy that they brought to the film and television industry and the audience and the audience which
yes uh bittersweet yeah do you have a favorite uh project out of any of these uh I mean my go-to
is Tim Curry like I said that's the one I remember most fondly from from my childhood
yeah yeah I think it was definitely I think speak to your point about how like you saw this one
later like with Dolly Parton and Peter Cullen I definitely saw their work but I didn't realize
it was you I didn't know I was watching his work you know I I learned about them much later on
whereas Curry I definitely saw more throughout like my childhood so like the fond memory is
you know it's there what about you uh I would have to be uh probably Peter Cullen of course
just because sorry Dolly yeah sorry Dolly uh just because Transformers I'm a big Transformers fan
so I saw Transformers when I was pretty young yeah so uh Peter Cullen is just kind of that
voice in my head yep yeah he lives there right free he does he does live there right great
nice um but yeah all three of these people are just amazing people in their own rights
well thank you all for tuning in to another fantastic episode as always and get out there
and watch some of their films you know pay tribute pay homage you know because the films
don't go anywhere no they don't yeah yeah they are forever it's all the memories that's right
that's right yeah and thanks to you again for tuning in watching us uh please stay stay tuned
in because we'll be back next week with another topic we're not gonna tell you what it is oh no
yeah we're having fun this is this is great yeah we'll see you next week take it easy
