AI GeneratedMargot Robbie appears on a talk show to promote her upcoming film, *Wuthering Heights*, opening February 13th. She discusses her experience as a producer and actress, the shift in her fan base following *Barbie*, and a chaotic private screening of the new movie with her Australian friends.
Our first guest tonight is a three-time Oscar nominee and one-time Barbie who stars in a
big screen adaptation of the classic novel so many of us pretended to read in high school.
Wuthering Heights opens in theaters February 13th. Please welcome Margot Robbie.
You look great, you smell great, all of those things. You're not dressed for the winter storm.
I'm guessing you're not headed to the east coast, are you? No, I've dressed for the sunny LA weather.
You don't have snow storms in Australia. We don't have a lot of snow, but we do have snow in
Australia, just not lots of it. My association with a snow day is just what I've seen in American
movies. It always looked really fun. I would love to have had a snow day. Snow days are the best.
Yeah, so they really are good. Oh, they're the greatest. I mean, for parents, they're an absolute
nightmare because you're stuck in the house with the kids when you didn't think you were going to
be. Yeah, but when you're a kid, it's the best. Yeah, you've never had one. Well, we didn't have
that, but I guess our equivalent, if it got too hot, you're allowed to go home, where I'm from.
Like Sundays, huh? Yeah, I remember it was 45 Celsius, so whatever that is. So 45 degrees,
if it hit 45 degrees. That's 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, right? Yeah, you were allowed to
go home. And I remember one summer, it kept hitting 45, so they changed it to 50. They did.
Which is like 120-something degrees, so yeah. Would you and the other kids be gathered around
the thermometer just waiting? Yeah, yeah, being like, can we go? We're melting. We're dying. Let
us go home. That is fun, yeah. Oh, I want to ask you, that Barbie movie, did that ever come out?
Yeah, it did. It's weird you missed it. Some people saw it. I thought I saw it, yeah.
Have you experienced a shift in your fan base since that film? Yes, very much so. And it's
been very sweet, actually, because my first American movie was The Wolf of Wall Street.
But I would say the people that would come up to me after that were a very different demographic.
And now I have little kids coming up and saying, there's Barbie, and it's so sweet. It seems much
better. I like this better. But it's confusing. A lot of my kids, sorry, a lot of my friends have
kids, and it's now, they're at an age where they're watching the Barbie movie, and they're
like, Auntie Maggie, wait, what? I think they're getting confused by the... Do you explain it to
them, or you let them just go with it? No, you don't want to explain that to them. Yeah, right.
Then they're going to ask about God, and death, and I'm not starting. And Wuthering Heights,
now you'll have another group of fans. Yeah, yeah. Comes out. Have you seen this movie with
an audience yet in the theater? Well, I'm a producer on the film, so I've seen the film a
lot of times. But I saw it with sort of an audience earlier, no, last week. Last week,
my friends, who are amazing, threw a bachelorette for Kathy. Kathy's the character I play. And I
kind of thought it was a joke at first. They were like, Kathy's Batch, Kathy's Batch. And I was like,
wait, are we really going to have a fake bachelorette for an imaginary character? And
they were like, yes, absolutely. So I thought, oh, that's a great idea. I know, it was very,
very fun. Because you could do anything you want and just say, it was Kathy.
I should have used that. Next time. Next time. Next time I have an imaginary bachelorette. So
what happens at Kathy's Batchelor party? I mean, there's girl code, so I really can't tell you
much. But what I will say is I thought, oh, I'll screen the movie at the start of The Bachelor.
I'll screen it for the girls, and they'll love it. And it was the most unhinged experience
of my life. I mean, first of all, it was the funnest Wednesday night I've ever had in my life.
It ended up being like the craziest night ever. But the screening itself, I mean, just to put
this into context, it's like 20 women were like frothing at the mouth. They were like rabid dogs.
There were a couple of drinks in already. And then the movie started, and I was like,
they were screaming so much. I was like, they're not going to actually, they're missing most of
the movie. But it wasn't really watching a movie. It was like a call and response
sort of situation. There was like constant commentary and screaming throughout and
sobbing in parts as well. Were you in your, like, well, you know, were you in, were you?
Oh, I was dressed. Oh, yes. No, there was a mood board. I was dressed in white, like,
corsets and lace, and they were all dressed like mob wives in black lace and corsets. And
the theme, I think it was Victorian slutty.
Do with that what you will. So everyone's wearing, like, lace and corsets and veils and
drunk and screaming at the screen. And like Jacob came on screen, and they just like,
I think it registered on the Richter scale. It was honestly, I was like, if he walked in right
now, I think they would beat him. It was safer that he's not here. Was this back home? No,
this was here in L.A. This was just a few nights ago. Oh, OK. Yeah. All right. So this wasn't a
group because I've noticed in my travels that Australian people. Well, a lot of them Aussies,
if that helps explain. OK. All right. Yeah. Yes. You know, there's one like person at the party
who's the craziest, like drunkest, like, like person stays up till 5 a.m. and can't understand
that you want to go to bed. Yeah. All Australian people are that same. Yeah. I was about to say,
yeah, very much the case. I'd say that was the majority of the group was like that. Yeah. And
maybe the most fun people in the whole world. I'd like to resolve that. I personally. So you
had a bunch of them there and they were going bananas. Absolutely. Freaking in the theater.
Have you had? Well, it wasn't it was it was this this place called Bird Streets. And we were we
had like a private room downstairs and they had a screen. And so thank God we were not amongst the
public, because, again, it was there was nothing appropriate about this this night at all,
particularly not the commentary throughout the film. So it was safe for that. We were
very much separated. And best for Jacob that he wasn't there. Very much. One friend in particular
who who was like the most drunk, shown most brightly. Do you know what? We played a drinking
game throughout the film. Everyone picked a word out of a hat and you had to drink when that word
was said in the movie. And my friend who got the word Kathy, he says Kathy like a thousand times in
this film. Like every three minutes, Jacob's like Kathy, Kathy, Kathy, Kathy. And then there's a lot
of Heathcliff's, too. But there's a lot of Kathy's. So my friend Phoebe picked Kathy. Phoebe got
Kathy. Yeah, she got Kathy. We're going to take a break and we're to see a clip from the film. Maybe
we'll even hear the word Kathy and have a drink. Margot Robbie is here. Perhaps that is why they
have not come. They may be intimidated, poor things. Yes, I'm sure that's it. No, I'm so bored I might die.
I have had enough of hearing about Mr. Linton. Heathcliff, I found him in these skirts.
Well, then you'll have to take them off. You will be so very sorry when I have this treat.
And you made her sorry. Jacob's going to be here tomorrow. I know, that's so exciting.
Yeah, I mean, so I just put me in a tree. Yeah, what does it feel like to have a man just suddenly put
you in a tree? Honestly, there's so many times in the movie where he just like picks me up and
puts me in a tree or picks me up with one hand. I have to say, like, it's really nice. It makes you
feel like, oh, I'm light as a feather. I'm a tiny little thing. Yeah. Can I tell you something? I've
had a man pick me up like that. How did it make you feel? You think I'm kidding, but I am not kidding.
Shaquille O'Neal. No. Lifted me up like I was a baby. And I just, I felt like, I just felt like a
little boy. Did you feel safe in his big, strong arms? I did. It was so much fun. Yeah, it's great, isn't it?
It was like that feeling you have when, like, you and your friend are fighting his older brother and
he just keeps throwing you in the pool over and over again. I just experienced that. And I thought
of that immediately when I saw it happen there. Yeah, yeah, I get it. The women, as you mentioned,
go absolutely crazy for this Jacob Elordi. I'm excited for the women in the audience
tomorrow night. Was Watering Heights a book that you read when you were a student? We didn't, it
wasn't on our curriculum. It was for a lot of schools, even in Australia, of course. But I,
yeah, for some reason it wasn't at my school when I was there. So I didn't read it. I didn't
read it until after I read Emerald's script. Oh, so then you decided to go back and read the book?
Yeah. I've read it a bunch of times now. It's phenomenal. How many times do you think you will
read it before the end? Did you ever cheat in school? No, I, um, no, I was really against that,
actually. Like, no, I wouldn't dab on someone else if they were cheating, but, like, I wasn't at
NARC. You wouldn't rat them out. Did you ever help someone else cheat? I would, I would help,
I would help if someone else, like, needed it. Did you ever read, do you have Cliff Notes over
there? You know what that is? Yeah, there was, gosh, there was a website you could go to when
I was at school. I can't remember what it was. But yeah, you could go and, like, yeah, read a
summary of a book instead of having to read the whole thing. We didn't have websites when I was
in school. You had to go to a bookstore. Now I don't even know if kids are reading and, well,
you know, writing their assignments with this. No, they're just reading textbooks. No, nobody
reads anymore. They don't read. This will be good for them. It will be the closest they get
to reading. Like, if they're in school and they're assigned Wuthering Heights, will you,
I've not read the book. Will they go watch the movie instead of reading? Yeah, will the movie
tell them everything they need to know? Because that could be a real selling point for the film.
Yeah, I don't know if that would get the grades that they need, really. Because most, to be honest,
most movie adaptations of Wuthering Heights, and there's been a lot, they kind of stop halfway
through the book. There's a whole second half where you go to the next generation. And most
movie adaptations don't really go. The 1992 one did with Ralph Fiennes and Juliet Benoist. They
did that second half of the book, but most don't. There's a lot of sex in this one. Is there that
much sex in the book? They never even really kissed. Wow. Yeah. You guys do. Yeah, we kiss a
lot. All over. All over the property. We kiss everywhere. Yeah, yeah. A lot of kissing. The
movie comes out on Valentine's Day. I assume that's intentional? Very intentional. It is,
it's a good Valentine's Day movie. A good Valentine's. Good, great, but Galentine's
movie, I mean, just having experience watching this movie with a gaggle of hyenas slash women,
I would say going with a group of girlfriends and having a couple drinks, and then just like,
that's going to be a fun night out. And then you can go with your partner. Right, and then on the
way home, you could say, why aren't you as romantic as Jacob Elordi? I was thinking, I was like,
why won't you put me in a tree? I wonder if this will start fights, because I do think a lot of
men are going to turn to their partners afterwards and be like, am I Heathcliff to you or am I Edgar
to you? Yeah. And I don't know if they want to hear the answer. I didn't even have to. And then
the follow-up question is going to be like, well, then who is your Heathcliff? And I don't know. I
didn't even have to ask the question. I knew I was Edgar the whole night. Yeah, yeah. My wife
may have called me Edgar. Ed, she was being nice, yeah. Oh, but Edgar's such a green flag. Well,
whether you're Edgar or Kathy or Heathcliff, Weathering Heights opens in theaters February
13th. Bring your gal pals, Margot Robbie, everybody. Thanks for joining us.
