The Prince and Princess of Wales are currently on their well-deserved and protected summer holiday,
a quiet time for family and continued recovery. But on Wednesday, the Princess has abruptly
interrupted that private break for a major reason, to unveil a deeply personal and intellectually
rigorous new museum exhibition that she has personally curated. While the Princess is not
physically present, she has broken her holiday silence to release a powerful written message
launching Makers and Creators, a special display of items she hand-picked from the collection of
the new V&A East Storehouse in London. The move is a testament to her profound dedication to her
patronages, proving that even when she is officially off-duty, her work continues behind the scenes.
The reason for this interruption is a project that lies at the very heart of her personal
passions. The Princess, who famously studied History of Art at the University of St Andrews,
has been the V&A's first and very active Royal Patron since 2018. This exhibition is the
culmination of that passion, a rare chance for the public to see the world through her expert eye.
In a message displayed with the exhibition, she wrote,
Objects can tell a story. A collection of objects can create a narrative.
This display celebrates our past Makers and Creators and illustrates how much historic
objects can influence fashion, design, film, art and creativity today. Her selections offer a
glimpse into her mind. The hand-picked items are eclectic and thoughtful, ranging from a
watercolour painting by the beloved children's author Beatrix Potter and a 200-year-old hand-made
Welsh quilt to a costume from a 1960 Royal Ballet production of The Sleeping Beauty.
According to V&A Director Dr Tristram Hunt, the Princess has
a real passion for the V&A collections and then a lot of knowledge around making and
the processes of making. Her decision to launch this project now, from her holiday retreat,
underscores the importance she places on her role. After a well-winned few weeks that have
seen her return to major events like Trooping the Colour and Wimbledon, this quiet academic
interruption to her holiday is a powerful statement. It shows a future Queen who is
not just a figurehead but an intelligent and passionate advocate for the arts,
whose dedication to her causes never rests.
