Anne's Reluctant Return to England
In 1521, after spending seven years in the exciting court of Francis I, Anne Boleyn was summoned by her Father back to England.
She joined Princess Mary Tudor in France in 1514 when Mary married Louis XII of France, and she had stayed after Louis XII died on New Year's Day in 1515.
While she served the 15-years old Queen Claude, she also served Margaret of Navarre, Francis' beautiful sister and a well-known liberal author and humanist.
Margaret was a confident woman, and her positive influence on Anne was evident throughout her life, and Anne was likely to be reluctant to return to England.
Her recall to England was to marry her cousin, James Butler, to settle her Father's claim to the Earldom of Ormond in Ireland.
While waiting for the King's approval of this marriage, Anne served as the Maid of Honor of Catherine of Aragon, where she met the dashing young page of Cardinal Wolsey.
Who was Henry Percy?
The dashing young Henry Percy came from an influential noble family, Henry Percy was the descendant of Harry Hotspur and the oldest son of the 5th Earl of Northumberland.
Harry Hotspur fought many campaigns and was victorious against the Scots and the French in the Hundred Years War.
Hotspur was the nickname given to the first Henry Percy by the Scots as a tribute for his quickness and readiness in battle.
The Henry Percy who met Anne Boleyn was to become the 6th Earl of Northumberland.
He was serving as the page to Cardinal Wolsey to explore and learn the intricacies of the court and politics.
Cardinal Wolsey was the most senior advisor of Henry VIII, so Henry's position meant that he often visited the Queen's household on behalf of the Cardinal.
The Forbidden Love
Henry Percy had many opportunities to meet the beautiful and fashionable Anne Boleyn, who had just returned from France. The two young love birds soon fell deeply in love in 1522, Henry was 20, and Anne was 21.
Unfortunately, Henry Percy was already engaged to Mary Talbot when he was 14, and Anne was waiting for approval from the King for her marriage to James Butler.
Further, Henry Percy's Father believed Anne to be too low in social status to marry his heir, as Thomas Boleyn was only a knight of hever castle, and his son would inherit his modest estate.
Henry Percy and Anne Boleyn still decided to be together despite all this and were secretly betrothed in early 1523.
What will happen to the young couple? We know that they never got married as Anne became the second queen of Henry VIII.
Join us for our next video in this series, Part 2 of the True Love of Anne Boleyn, as we explore what or who happened to the young lovers and who broke their hearts.
What’s next?
Why did they break off their engagement?
Who was the heartbreaker?
