Thirty miles from modern Mexico City lie the remains of one of the largest cities of the ancient world.
And here is the astonishing thing.
We do not know what its people called it. We do not know what language they spoke. We do not know the name of a single one of its rulers. Not one name — in a city of perhaps 125,000 people, among the half-dozen largest cities on earth in its day.
The name we use for it — Teotihuacan — is not its own. It is the name given to it by the Aztecs, a thousand years after its fall, when they arrived at the abandoned ruins and, awed by their scale, decided this must be the place where the gods made themselves. In the language of the Aztecs it means "the place where the gods were made."
