Tonight, BART service mostly restored after being shut down at all San Francisco stations due to a fire.
I just waited for a bus and, you know, figured out, tried to figure out what I was going to do.
Tonight, the fire is out right near the Daly City BART station, but service disruptions, they do continue.
Good evening, everyone. I'm Mike Mieback.
And I'm Claudine Wong. This has been a constantly developing story that we've been following for you in our newsroom.
And KTVU's Zach Sauce is at the scene with the very latest on what we know. Zach?
And as you can see, the area where this all happened is still taped off.
The fire-out crews have left the scene, but we have seen BART crews inspecting some of the lines here.
And you can see, just off to my left, there is a train that is out of service because the lines up there are depowered.
Service between Balboa Park and Colma, there is no service between those stations right now.
Earlier, that service interruption extending all the way to West Oakland.
Crews first called here just before 7 in the evening after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a building on fire.
Video of it posted to social media here.
The building turning out to be a substation powering the rails here.
A fire on the tracks next to the substation.
Also called in crews from both SF Fire and North County Fire, which includes Daly City,
tackling this one alarm, which caused power, as I mentioned, to be shut off to the rails.
I can tell you earlier in the day, around 5 in the evening, BART also reporting an equipment failure at Daly City,
which appears to be connected to all of this, and that caused some service interruptions as well.
Here's some of what SF Fire had to say earlier, followed by a passenger we spoke to trying to find his way home.
On one side, we had a typical structure-style fire, so we have a typical structure.
The exterior of that structure was on fire.
We also have a track, which they call the rail section.
We had items that were on the rail section that were on fire.
This appears to be two incidences that are related to each other at the same location,
but again, do not appear to be suspicious at this time.
You know, it's a great system. I think it's getting old.
I hope that tax measure passes, because they really need some upgrades,
and it costs a lot of money to run these things and to upgrade them,
you know, so we can have reliable service, because I really depend on it.
So, some good news to report. No one was injured during all of this.
For riders impacted right now, SAMTRANS and SFMUNI is available to bridge that service gap.
As far as what caused this fire, that is unclear right now.
Also unclear when they expect to be able to fully restore service to these BART stations.
Back to you.
Yeah, so Zach, certainly people who use BART in the morning commute,
as you heard the passenger that you had talked to, so many people rely on it.
They're just going to stand by and probably watch and make sure that they allot some time
in case by morning it's not done.
Yeah, BART certainly advising people to check on their status updates
to see what those service interruptions look like in the morning.
So that's the best option for you if you're going to be relying on this service come the morning commute.
Yeah, certainly. Want it done as quickly as possible, but as safely as possible.
All right. Thank you, Zach.
