The big story on Action News tonight is the major development now set to take shape,
reshaping the sports complex in South Philadelphia.
These are the very first renderings released today showing the proposed future home of the 76ers,
the Flyers and Philadelphia's forthcoming WNBA franchise.
A gleaming, modern new arena that may look faintly familiar to you.
Inspired by the legendary Spectrum, that new facility will rise in the very same spot
where that famed arena once stood.
When complete, its owners say it'll be a linchpin of a wholly reimagined experience,
one poised to create thousands of jobs and generate billions of dollars for the city.
Action News reporter Brianna Gallagher live there in South Philadelphia tonight.
Brianna, you've got all the details for us tonight.
Yeah. Hey, Brian. Well, Xfinity Mobile Arena, that's right next to me.
Currently, we are standing in Lot G, where they will break ground in a few months.
So all these tailgaters who are here right now will have to find somewhere else to tailgate.
We caught up with some of those tailgaters ahead of this Phillies game.
For some of them, this was the first time that they are seeing these renderings.
It's safe to say they're impressed. Oh.
Oh, that looks nice. I'm pretty excited that they decided to do it like in this area, too.
Keep all the stadiums local. Keep them upstate side live.
Whoa, is that real? That's pretty cool.
Six renderings of a proposed arena that the 76ers, the Flyers and a future WNBA team will call home were revealed today.
Sports director Deuces Rogers sat down with Comcast CEO Brian Roberts and Sixers managing partner Josh Harris.
There's a lot of history of film. You start with like what makes Philly special.
And obviously, you know, if you look at those steps, it's the Rocky step.
There's an homage to that. Across from the bank next to Stateside Live,
the proposed arena will sit along the south side of Tyson Avenue where the spectrum once stood.
The new design is a throwback to the iconic former arena.
But obviously the spectrum was the place where, you know, the championships were won.
And, you know, we want to bring that back. The 76ers say this will be the largest fully privately funded project in Philadelphia history
and bring 15000 jobs and generate six billion dollars over the next 10 years.
Everything new is great, isn't it? You know, I have no problem with it.
People living near the stadium have mixed reaction.
There are so many games. People settle my step. They're throwing beer cans and stuff like that.
I can't wait. I've been with the Phillies and the Eagles for like 40 years.
So I'm looking forward to for the younger generation to enjoy it.
The goal is simple to honor the past and elevate the fan experience.
Make Philly the proudest, best sports town in America.
And that's what we're working on. Now, the stadium is projected to be completed by 2030,
which is when the WNBA is set to make its debut here in Philadelphia.
Keep in mind, Xfinity Mobile Arena won't come down until after the new arena opens.
And once construction begins, all of these parking spots, parking is going to be a lot more limited.
These tailgaters are going to have to find a new location to tailgate for games.
But it's safe to say they have plenty of time to do so.
Overall, a lot of excitement down here in South Philadelphia.
That's where we're live tonight. Brianna Gallagher, Channel 6 Action News.
Going to look a lot different in just a few years time. Okay, Brianna, thank you.
