This is a story making international headlines. A Tucson realtor accused of
using racist and homophobic slurs on board a flight assaulting people. This
ended in a complete catastrophe as a man ended up duct-taped to a seat. Yeah, well
tonight we're hearing from one man who helped get this situation under control.
Justin Lum has more. Police say 67 year old Lane Arthur Lundeen was on an
American Airlines flight last Thursday from Dallas to Newark when the plane was
diverted to Baltimore. About two hours into the flight, passenger Richard Olenek
tells Fox 10 Lundeen, who was in the fourth row, started becoming belligerent
yelling racist and homophobic slurs in front of people including women and
children. A flight attendant asked Lundeen to calm down and stop using that
language. I'd say the total time was about 10 minutes of him verbally lashing
out and after about 10 minutes or so was he actually ended up striking the
passenger that was next to him. He put his hand on on the passenger's throat
that was next to him. Richard says a woman in the third row stood up and
tried to help by hitting Lundeen's arm to get him to stop. Then she was also
hit. Richard owns an indoor shooting range in New Jersey. He says he and his
store manager, Juan Mejia, who's a retired police officer, started to
intervene. They physically restrained Lundeen, but he continued to put up a
fight. The flight attendants initially to start handing us zip ties, which for
me was was relatively new. I've never, you know, I'm not a police officer. I
was like, okay, all right, so this is where we're gonna go. We're gonna do,
we're gonna do these zip ties. So we ended up putting the zip ties on and
once the zip ties were on, he still continued to resist and to fight, which
led us to take, go to the next level. All right. So then at that point in
between us trying to zip tie him, he was also, he was also biting us. Um, he
was, he had actually bitten one, um, and he was attempting to bite me as well.
Seeing that this gentleman had tried to bite us, the flight attendant walked
over and gave us a piece of duct tape. He gave one a piece of duct tape and he
told one to put the duct tape on this gentleman's mouth, at which point one
said, no, I'm not, you know, I'm not comfortable doing that because I don't
want to interfere with his breathing, right? You know, we didn't, you know, we
don't want to harm the gentleman. Of course, the men wrapped the tape around
Lundin's chest, head and arms. Richard says the real estate agent suffered
cuts and scratches on his arms when he was flailing them around. Richard says
the crew stepped up and did everything they could to assist. We did understand
at one point afterwards that there was, he was served one serving of alcohol.
We didn't feel like that, you know, that alone certainly wouldn't be, um, what
drove that. We don't believe right, but we don't, we also don't know. We also
don't know how much he had to drink beforehand. Were there any mental
issues happening? We don't really know. After the flight was diverted to
Baltimore, police took Lundin into custody. He's facing counts of
disorderly conduct and second degree assault. The FBI is investigating
following Lundin's arrest. His real estate firm in Tucson severed ties with
him in a statement. Long Realty says, in part, it promptly ended its
affiliation with the individual. The individual is no longer associated with
or authorized to represent Long Realty in any capacity. I truly hope this
gentleman gets the help that he needs. And, um, you know, I hope he can, you
know, recover from this. Justin Lum, Fox 10 News.
