The event brought together thousands of workers and political figures to honor the contributions of labor unions and discuss the future of workers' rights and democracy.
You got it, Derek ever a little bit of both. We're talking about the union
group celebrating the contribution of workers on this Labor Day with a march
and rally at Roosevelt Park. The march set to kick off at nine o'clock this
morning. Robin Murdoch live in Detroit following along. Robin, it's been a busy
morning. Lots of activity.
Yeah, I've been running around like crazy this morning, Dina. But you know
what? That is fun. The fun part of working Labor Day and the fun part of
documenting what has become a Labor Day tradition here in the Detroit area.
The Labor Day parade. We have moved locations right now. We're now at
Roosevelt Park right here in the Corktown area, right in front of the
train station. This is where the mile long parade down Michigan Avenue ended.
So that is why you are seeing just crowds and crowds of people out here
right now. Thousands of people in just a little bit. They're going to have a
big rally here, where a number of speakers are expected to talk about
defending democracy and things like that. While we were out at the parade,
though, we did see a number of people, a number of politicians actually
walking with the various union groups that were taking part in this. Those
politicians, they were taking advantage of the moment they were meeting and
greeting those along the parade route and really trying to connect with some
of the constituents out there. Now we saw Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson,
who is running for governor. We chatted with Eli Sabat, the prosecuting
attorney in Washington, Washtenaw County, who wants to be the next
attorney general. And we also had a quick interview with Democratic
candidate for U. S. Senate Mohammed El Sayed as he walked with union members
right down Michigan Avenue. I want you to take a listen now to a part of that
conversation.
Labor Day workers built this country. They built the middle class. They built
the 40 hour work week. They built the fact that our kids go to school
instead of going to work, and they can build them again. If we're willing to
stand with our unions, that's why we gotta go fight for the Pro Act. We
need we need we need elected officials. We're gonna stand up and just say
union proudly. They built our past, they built our president, and they'll
build our future. So you are strong. I'm proud to be a second generation
union member. How to stand with these unions. I'm proud that they stand with
me. And that was Democratic candidate for U. S. Senate Mohammed El Sayed
speaking with us very briefly. As you know, he was just endorsed by the U. A.
W. Back in June. Now again, we're at Roosevelt Park. You could see it right
behind me. You could probably hear a band playing in the background and just
a little bit. There's gonna be a number of union leaders who will be speaking
here today. They're expected to talk about the importance of unions about
voting rights and, of course, defending democracy. So it has been a jam packed
today here covering the Labor Day parade, and there's still a lot more
action happening right behind me here at Roosevelt Park. I'm Robin Murdoch.
We're live here in Corktown. I'll send it right back to you guys.
