New here at four. A postal worker is seriously hurt after being hit by a car while on the job.
It happened yesterday in Holmesburg. Today we learned that he lost his leg as a result.
Action News reporter Becca Hendrickson is live at police headquarters with video of the crash. Becca.
Sarah, we do want to warn viewers that this video can be difficult to watch. As for the victim,
we learned he's beloved in his community. He was a postal worker in that neighborhood
who got to know everyone and he is in critical condition this evening.
The gruesome crash was caught on surveillance video. Police say the 48-year-old worker was
standing behind his parked postal vehicle gathering mail when this silver Honda sedan
hit him, kept driving and crashed into another parked car. Sources say the worker lost his leg
and has severe facial injuries too. How could it happen to someone like that?
It happened Thursday afternoon after 2 30 on Ashburner and Walker streets in the Holmesburg
section of Philadelphia. Neighbors say the postal worker was on his usual route but not in his usual
vehicle. He was rushed to Jefferson Torsdale Hospital in critical condition. This guy was
amazing. He went out of his way like at my store. Tony's deals on the street here. I would turn
around and say, hey, Sam, can you wait for me? Like he's ready to go home and he would wait.
Neighbors say the worker knew everyone on his route and always made an effort to be kind.
Actually, I was crying just now because I met the guy. He used to come to my store every day
and he was the nicest person ever. Always smiling. Alexander says the driver who hit
the man had just left his dealership after picking up a friend's car when the accident
occurred. Those who know the worker say they're hoping he can recover prayers, prayers from
everyone. Police say the driver stayed on the seat that has not been charged, but the crash
investigative division is investigating this crash. Life here at police headquarters,
Becca Hendrickson, Channel six action news, sir. That's sad. Okay, Becca. Thank you.
