Mistrial declared in Lindsay Clancy murder trial after defense’s appeal unsuccessful

I'm going to bring in Boston 25 news reporter Bob Ward live at the courthouse. Bob, you were in that courtroom. What's the reaction this afternoon? Hey, Cal, it's Bob Ward. Are you talking to me right now? Yes. Hi, Bob. Yeah, you're live here on Boston 25. Okay. I'm sorry. Somebody was in my ear and I wasn't sure you were tossing down to me. So, yeah, there was surprise in the courtroom when the judge said, I am going to declare a mistrial. Well, Kevin Reddington offered up one final shot after he found out that the SJC justice had denied that emotion. Kevin Reddington tried again, this time citing federal law, federal statute, federal precedent, and the judge listened to it. Judge William Sullivan listened to it and he denied it again and he said, I am declaring a mistrial. At that point, I had spectators behind me and they gasped. Some of them sounded like they were getting emotional. They were in the courtroom hoping to hear that Lindsey Clancy was acquitted, but that is not to be. Instead, this first trial of Lindsey Clancy has been declared deadlocked and now a mistrial. And I'll tell you, Cal, it moves along very, very quickly because the judge, after the jury was let out of the courtroom and he thanked them for their service, he turned to the two sides and said, you know, I would like to start thinking about getting this on the calendar. I'm thinking maybe sometime in the fall. And then they set a date of September 29th for a pre-trial hearing, the first, as we look forward to the second trial of Lindsey Clancy. So things are moving very, very quickly now. And it appears that they're trying to get the second trial of Lindsey Clancy in before the end of the year. It seems like it would be very fast, especially when we saw what we went through with, say, the Karen Reid case. I believe it was almost a year before her case was retried after the mistrial. I think it was nine months. Yeah. So they are looking to move. But if you. Yeah. And if you think about it, you know, Kevin Reddington said he'd be ready. He's not today, but he has said earlier this week that I'll be ready to go tomorrow if I have to. If there's a mistrial, he said, I've got my witnesses, I've got my evidence. I'm good to go. We don't know what the opinion is of the DA's office. Maybe we'll hear from them in the next hour or so. But it does, regardless of what they're thinking, it does feel that Judge William Sullivan wants to get this moving and not let this take any longer than it has to take. Well, and to your point, now that the case is officially, I don't want to say over, it's not over, but we have a mistrial now and at this court. Part of it has ended. The trial has ended, at least we would expect to hear from prosecutors as well as the defense team. Reddington has not been shy about speaking with the media. He has made himself available, walking out of court and answering questions. What remains to be seen is what we hear from prosecutors and their plans going forward.
