Why Huawei Became the Target of a Nationwide Joke

Huawei has become the target of one of China’s strangest viral jokes. A traditional bamboo cicada toy, a ridiculous “waaah” sound, and even a public toilet sign in Shanghai have all been turned into memes mocking one of China’s most politically symbolic companies.
But this story is about more than Huawei. It reveals growing frustration with patriotic marketing, censorship, and the idea that criticizing a “national champion” is somehow unpatriotic. The harder authorities tried to suppress the joke, the bigger it became.
