From drug dealers and crooked aristocrats to double-crossing gangsters and deadly family secrets,
The Gentleman's season 1 turns a huge inheritance into one hell of a crash course in organized crime.
Let's recap.
Eddie's dark dukedom.
Eddie Horniman, an army officer with the UN,
returns to England after learning that his father, the Duke of Halsted, is on his deathbed.
When the Duke dies, Eddie unexpectedly inherits the dukedom and family estate,
bypassing his irresponsible older brother, Freddie.
Why?
Their father knew Freddie was a mess who ran on cocaine and impulsivity.
He also owed £8 million to Tommy Dixon, a vicious drug dealer.
Eddie decides the only way to save his brother is to sell the estate to American investor
Stanley Johnston and pay off the debt.
Then Eddie meets Susie Glass.
She reveals that a massive cannabis farm operates beneath the estate,
established through a financial arrangement between their fathers.
Suddenly, selling the property isn't quite so simple.
Susie negotiates with Tommy and cuts Freddie's debt in half,
provided they deliver £4 million quickly and Freddie agrees to appear in a humiliating video.
Eddie raises the money by selling the estate's wine collection to Johnston and,
with Susie's help, recovering a major bet Freddie placed with the deceptive bookmaker Sticky Pete.
But when Tommy arrives to collect the cash and film Freddie,
he pushes the cocaine-fueled brat too far.
Freddie grabs a shotgun and shoots Tommy dead.
The family business has officially become a crime scene.
The cover-up, Tommy's associate Jethro tries to escape but is captured.
Susie calls in Felix, an underground crime scene cleaner, to dispose of Tommy and kill Jethro.
Eddie, however, takes pity on Jethro.
Instead of killing him, he devises a plan to frame him for Tommy's murder and help him flee
the country. There's just one problem. Tommy's brother, John the Gospel Dixon,
arrives at the estate looking for him. John is an evangelical preacher and head
of the Scouse cocaine syndicate, and he brings plenty of muscle.
Eddie convinces John that Tommy and Jethro had an argument and suggests Jethro may have
been responsible for Tommy's disappearance. But while retrieving Jethro's passport from his flat,
Eddie runs into one of Dixon's henchmen. A fight breaks out.
Eddie kills the man but takes a bullet himself. Later, he attends a gala hosted by Johnston.
Susie drops another bombshell. Johnston is actually a crystal meth kingpin determined
to expand his drug empire. He even offers Susie a partnership.
Eddie decides it's time to meet the man at the top. He visits Bobby Glass, Susie's father,
who was imprisoned in a luxurious open-air prison thanks to his wealth and influence.
Eddie proposes ending the cannabis operation in exchange for making Bobby even more money.
Bobby agrees to consider it. Eddie then helps Jethro escape the country.
Or so he thinks. Susie secretly orders Felix to murder Jethro,
eliminating the loose end behind Eddie's back. The Lamborghini job goes wrong.
Things get even messier when Jimmy, the cannabis farm's chief grower,
loses a shipment after being conned by a mysterious woman named Gabrielle.
With the shipment delayed, Susie agrees to help an important customer known as Tony Blair,
the leader of a Kosovan Albanian gang. His request? Steal a Lamborghini Huracan.
Eddie gets roped in. The car belongs to Mercy, a chop shop owner with far more
violent tendencies than she lets on. Eddie infiltrates her garage at night,
only to discover a captured member of Blair's gang. He rescues the man and learns the truth.
The Lamborghini contains a hidden cocaine shipment. Mercy is also a drug dealer backed
by Colombian interests, and Blair has played Eddie and Susie. His fake car theft story was
simply a way to get his hands on the cocaine. Next, Mercy's gang captures Freddy and demands
the drugs in exchange for his life. Eddie and Susie arrange a trade,
offering Blair, who is brutally killed by Mercy. Susie is impressed by Eddie's composure under
fire. His mom, Lady Sabrina, meanwhile, is increasingly worried about the family's growing
criminal activities. The missing cocaine remains nowhere to be found. Then Gabrielle contacts Jimmy
again, ready to continue her con. Enter the Nazi Lord. Looking for a new location for the cannabis
operation, Eddie approaches Max, the newly installed Lord Bassington, and offers to
build a farm underneath his estate. Max agrees, but only if Eddie helps him deal with Frank,
a journalist he claims is blackmailing him over his late father's transgressions.
Susie helps Eddie track him down and bring him to Max. That's when Frank reveals the horrifying
truth. Max is a Nazi and an admirer of Adolf Hitler. Even worse, he claims to possess Hitler's
famously missing testicle. Naturally, the meeting ends in a shootout. Max and Frank are both wounded,
while Susie's enforcers intimidate Max into signing over the land for the new cannabis operation.
Meanwhile, Jimmy, completely smitten with Gabrielle, shows her the farm and reveals
crucial details about the glass distribution network. Yeah, that's a mistake he's going to
regret. The Wards join the Empire. Bobby tells Susie he has no intention of allowing Eddie to
simply walk away. Susie then enlists Eddie's help with Florian de Groot, the manager responsible for
distribution through Belgium, who now wants a larger financial cut. At the same time,
two generators are stolen from the cannabis farm by the Ward family, a notorious group of travelers.
Eddie and Susie confront their leader, J.P. Ward. He wants a piece of the cannabis operation. Eddie
proposes an arrangement. Use the Wards as distributors and cut de Groot out. It works,
until four million pounds disappears from the farm. Suspicion immediately falls on the Wards,
but Eddie digs deeper and realizes de Groot orchestrated the robbery to frame them and
reclaim his position. He confesses everything and names his accomplice, Susie's bodyguard,
Keith. Eddie hands Keith over to the Wards for execution. Before dying, though, Keith reveals
the truth about Susie ordering Jethro's murder. Eddie's trust in Susie takes a serious hit.
Elsewhere, Lady Sabrina and Jeff reflect on their former affair. He also acknowledges being the
biological father of Eddie and Freddy's sister, Charlotte. No easy exit. Eddie has now made enough
money to leave the glass operation. But Susie delivers another obstacle. The money needs
another three months to be properly laundered and officially counted as profit. Eddie is furious.
Another complication arises when their launderer, Chucky Kubra, catches Susie's brother Jack with
his girlfriend. Soon after, Eddie meets Henry Collins, an ex-army officer and Jack's promoter,
at a boxing party. Collins offers to help Eddie launder the money. Initially, Eddie goes back to
Chucky after Susie repairs their relationship. Then he learns the truth. Susie deliberately
delayed the laundering process. So Eddie takes the money to Henry instead. Susie finally admits
the truth. Eddie can't quit working with the Glass Empire. He turns to Johnston for help.
Meanwhile, Freddy makes an astonishing proposal to Susie, growing cocaine weed, and implies that
he would allow Eddie to be murdered so he could take over the estate and business himself. Susie
says no. Now Collins has ambitions of his own. During a fight between Jack and an Uzbek boxer,
Collins tells Susie he plans to take over her drug ventures, peacefully or through war. Susie
threatens him, and Collins retaliates by having Jack knocked out in the ring. Jack ends up in a
coma, Johnston's master plan. Susie blames Eddie for involving Collins. She orders the assassinations
of Collins' lieutenant and the Uzbek boxer. But Bobby steps in and tells her he'll deal with
Collins himself. Eddie, meanwhile, learns that Johnston wants the names of the other twelve
landowners who host Glass Cannabis Farms. He gets them from Lord Tibbsy Whitecroft,
a former Glass associate. Then Freddy confesses his darkest secret. He was planning Eddie's death
with Susie. Of course, Eddie loses it. Another confession comes from Jimmy. He reveals that he
told Gabriel about Susie's whereabouts. Now it's Gabriel's turn to fess up. She's working for
Johnston. He is behind the thefts of the weed shipments, DeGroote's shipping delays, Keith's
betrayal, and Collins' attacks. Every move was designed to weaken the Glass Empire from within.
Eddie gives the names to Johnston's chief of staff, Stevens, but then secretly visits Bobby
and hints that he has another plan. Susie ambushes Collins and seriously wounds him.
Before she can finish him, however, Collins reveals Eddie's secret meetings with Johnston.
She gets revenge by calling John Dixon and revealing the truth about Tommy's murder.
Then Charlotte returns from university, pregnant. The family is stunned.
Jeff, worried that Charlotte could be in danger because of the drug empire, finally tells her
the truth. Eddie chooses his side. Jack eventually wakes from his coma. At the same time, Bobby tells
Susie that Eddie isn't actually a traitor. He gave Johnston fake names. Susie realizes Eddie
has been playing a much bigger game. She sends reinforcements to the Horniman estate to protect
the family. But a final shootout is avoided when Bobby negotiates a deal with John Dixon.
Freddy and Eddie finally reconcile. Charlotte and Jeff have their own emotional heart-to-heart,
during which Jeff admits that he is her biological father. Then Bobby drops the biggest bombshell
yet. He's retiring. But before stepping away, he tasks Eddie and Susie with overseeing bids
for his empire. Three major forces want it. Johnston, the Columbians through Mercy,
and the Russians through Sticky Pete. Eddie decides he doesn't want to leave anymore.
He likes the criminal world. He then builds a consortium involving Tibbsy,
the other twelve lords, and Collins. Susie initially refuses to work with Collins,
but Lady Sabrina and Eddie convince her to join. The gentlemen take over. Once all the bids are
submitted, Eddie makes his move. He sabotages Johnston by arranging for his arrest over tax
affairs. He eliminates Sticky Pete and Mercy too. And Collins? Eddie betrays him as well.
He executes him, proving to Susie that he never genuinely intended to work with him.
Eddie has gone from reluctant duke to ruthless crime boss. And Bobby is impressed. He reveals
that his retirement was actually a test. He wanted to see whether Eddie and Susie were capable of
inheriting and running the empire one day. They passed. With the new order established, Johnston
finds himself imprisoned alongside Bobby in the luxurious open-air prison. And Eddie Horniman
is now officially one of THE GENTLEMEN. If you liked this recap, like and subscribe
