What if one decision could split a life into infinite possibilities?
Dark Matter, Season 1 takes that terrifying question and turns it into a mind-bending
race through alternate realities, where every version of Jason Dessin is fighting for the
same thing, his family.
Let's recap.
The Kidnapping Jason Dessin is a college physics professor
living a quiet life in Chicago with his wife, Daniela, and their son, Charlie.
His world seems perfectly ordinary until he attends a celebration for his friend, Ryan,
who has just won a prestigious science award.
On his walk home, however, Jason is abducted at gunpoint by a masked man.
The stranger takes him to a building site, forces him to strip and surrender his phone,
then drugs him.
As Jason loses consciousness, he is asked a chilling question.
Is he happy with his life?
And has he ever wondered about the other lives he could have lived?
Jason admits that he has.
When he wakes, he's inside Velocity Labs, where psychiatrist Amanda Lucas and CEO Leighton
Vance greet him with relief.
They seem thrilled that he has returned, but Jason has no idea what they're talking about.
He escapes, only to discover that his home isn't quite his home.
Daniela and Charlie are gone.
The decor is different, and Amanda claims that she and Jason live together.
The horrifying truth soon comes out.
Jason's abductor is another version of himself, Jason 2, who has taken over his life and even
seduced Daniela.
Two very different lives.
Jason checks himself into a hospital.
There, he learns something even more bizarre.
In this reality, he's a world-renowned physicist who hasn't been seen publicly for more than
a year.
There's also a psychoactive compound in his system.
He then tracks down Daniela.
Unlike his own reality, she is a successful artist here.
After her art exhibition, Jason, Ryan, and Daniela talk.
Daniela explains that the Jason from this world had confessed that he regretted ending
their relationship years earlier before disappearing.
Ryan doesn't believe Jason's story, but Daniela agrees to help him investigate.
Jason eventually realizes where the two versions of his life diverged.
Daniela's pregnancy.
Jason 1 chose to stay with her and become a father.
Jason 2 chose his career instead.
That decision led to success, but he craved family too.
So now, he has snatched the life he once walked away from.
Meanwhile, Dawn, a member of Velocity's security team, breaks into Daniela's condo, kills her,
and captures Jason 1.
The box that can cross universes.
Jason 1 agrees to work with Velocity, claiming that he wants his memories back.
His research leads to a breakthrough.
Jason 2 found a way to travel between dimensions.
The secret is a giant metal box.
A traveler enters it after being injected with a chemical compound designed to inhibit
areas of the prefrontal cortex and induce a state of superposition.
Once inside, the person can move between an infinite number of possible realities.
Jason tries to learn more from Ryan, but Leighton eventually realizes that he's an imposter
and tries to force the truth out of him.
Ryan seemingly gets killed in the chaos.
Amanda, however, believes Jason and breaks him out of confinement.
She plans to help him return home.
When they're discovered, the two rush into the box, inject themselves with the compound,
and suddenly find themselves standing in an endless corridor lined with doors.
Each door leads somewhere else, and Leighton enters it as well.
Back in Jason 1's world, Donyella begins noticing that something about her husband
has changed.
Welcome to the Infinite Corridor, and Jason and Amanda witness an infinite number of alternate
realities behind the doors.
They begin exploring, desperately trying to find Jason's original world.
But it's a hellish adventure.
Every reality seems to be ruined or uninhabitable.
They eventually reach a frozen Chicago and barely survive a devastating blizzard.
The key to navigating the corridor?
The doors respond to the traveler's mental states.
The worlds aren't chosen randomly.
Their thoughts, emotions, fears, and desires influence where they end up.
Meanwhile, Jason 2 quits his job and approaches Leighton in Jason 1's world.
He demonstrates the box's capabilities and offers to provide the ampoules in exchange
for a fortune.
Back home, Donyella and Charlie get wary of Jason 2 after he misses the memorial service
for his late son.
Inside the box, Jason 1 and Amanda grow closer as their impossible quest continues.
Then an injured Leighton from Jason 2's world emerges into a devastated reality.
Well, the multiverse is already becoming dangerously complicated.
The search for home, Jason 1 and Amanda eventually find a world where Blair, a lab employee from
Jason 2's world, is living.
Blair has survived in a dangerous reality but refuses to return to the box.
She believes navigating the infinite corridor is nearly impossible and tells Amanda to find
her own path instead of simply helping Jason.
The duo then keep trying to remain calm and focused when opening doors, but they repeatedly
land in horrific worlds.
They visit a plague-ravaged reality where Charlie is dead and Donyella is dying.
In another world, Jason is an imprisoned criminal.
Eventually, Jason finds a reality that seems like his own.
But when he visits his home, Donyella calls the police and Charlie attacks him.
Back in Jason 1's world, Jason 2 convinces Donyella to quit her job too.
This sudden transformation makes her feel increasingly excluded from their marriage.
Now, Jason 2 needs more ampoules to secure Leighton's funding, so he travels to his original
world to retrieve them.
There, he learns that Jason 1 and Amanda escaped through the box.
Donyella discovers the truth.
Jason 2 encourages Donyella to start painting again, but he makes a disastrous mistake when
he feeds Charlie nuts without realizing that his son is allergic.
At the emergency room, Donyella notices needle marks on Jason 2's arm.
She later confides in Blair, who advises her to follow him.
When Jason 2 embarrasses Donyella by displaying one of her unfinished paintings at a charity
auction, she finally decides to investigate.
She follows him to a storage unit and discovers the ampoules.
Donyella then recruits Ryan to analyze the compound.
Meanwhile, Jason 1 tries a new strategy inside the box.
He writes down a detailed description of his own world, hoping that focusing his mind on
it will help him find the correct reality.
It doesn't.
He and Amanda continue landing in worlds that look almost right, but never quite are.
Exhausted, they eventually stop to rest and explore.
Elsewhere, Jason 2 meets Amanda for a therapy session.
He is later confronted by Ryan over the compound Donyella gave him, believing Jason stole his
research.
Jason 2 offers to show Ryan the box and take him through a more technologically advanced
Chicago and strands him there.
He returns to Jason 1's world and seals the box in concrete.
The homecoming matters get worse when a detective arrives at the Dessin home investigating Ryan's
disappearance.
He was last seen with Jason 2.
Donyella confronts Jason about the drug.
To calm her fears, he finally explains what the compound does, but leaves out Ryan, Jason
1, and the box.
He then reopens the box and uses it to replace Ryan with another version of him from a different
world.
Meanwhile, Amanda and Jason 1 visit a more progressive Chicago to rejuvenate.
Amanda explains that she chose the world by thinking about ideas and concepts rather than
specific people, imagining what kind of reality might actually be worth experiencing.
She likes this world enough to stay and asks Jason to do the same.
He refuses.
The two share a kiss before going their separate ways.
Next, Jason uses his last ampoule and successfully returns to his own reality.
He stops at a store to buy protective gear, but as soon as he leaves, another nearly identical
Jason walks in.
That's when the true nightmare begins.
The Jasons take over.
Another Jason attacks Jason 2, who kills him.
Donyella visits the replacement Ryan, who claims to be her mechanic.
When she asks where his memory ends, he recalls drinking with the man she confirms was Jason.
Meanwhile, Jason 1 is spotted at his hotel and followed by yet another version of himself.
He enters the local bar to lose his pursuer and finds another Jason, Jason 3, already there.
Jason realizes the unbelievable truth.
Every decision he made inside the box created another Jason.
Some of those Jasons made the right choices and eventually found their way back to his reality.
Jason 3 eventually leaves, warning Jason 1 not to interfere with his reunion with Donyella and Charlie.
Soon after, Jason 2 takes Charlie on a tour of the University of Chicago and notices yet
another Jason following them.
He sends Charlie away and kills the other version.
Jason 1 takes a different approach.
He deliberately gets himself arrested for smoking inside a restaurant so he can be alone
with Donyella.
She accepts his shocking explanation and promises to meet him later with Charlie.
Jason 2 is planning to skip town with his family, but Donyella incapacitates him and
runs with Charlie.
The real Jason arrives and they dodge other Jasons on the way.
The ultimate choice.
The Dessons flee to the holiday home of one of Charlie's friends.
There, Jason discovers an online forum where the Jasons who have arrived in his world are
arguing over which of them deserves to stay with Donyella and Charlie.
Donyella settles the matter herself.
She sends a message telling the Jasons that she chooses Jason 1.
But the danger isn't over.
At the Desson residence, Jason 3 restrains Jason 2 and lures Blair into helping him track
Jason 1 through the car she lent him earlier.
He pulls a gun on her, but Blair overpowers him and demands the truth.
Soon, multiple Jasons descend on the Dessons' hiding place.
Unexpectedly, Jason 2 saves Jason 1 and helps the family escape.
He apologizes for his actions and leaves them a box containing ampoules in the car, hoping
to set things right.
The Dessons know they can no longer stay in their world.
They go to the box's location, only to find it packed with Jasons.
Despite all the tension, they agree to let the Dessons go in peace.
Jason, Donyella, and Charlie choose a doorway in the Infinite Corridor and step toward another
reality together.
But the multiverse isn't finished with them.
Layton from Jason 1's world enters the box and injects an ampoule.
Meanwhile, Blair 2 leaves the world where she encountered Jason and Amanda.
And in the more progressive reality, Amanda is approached by Ryan, who appears to have
been trying to recreate the chemical compound used in the ampoules.
Now subscribe to First Curiosity for more recaps, because the Dessons may have found
a new world.
But with infinite realities still waiting behind those doors, their story is far from
over.
