Hey friends, Leslie from Friend-N-Knit with.
Welcome to episode 81 of my knitting channel.
Today is August 27th. It is a Thursday and the weather is just perfect. I have the window open
so hopefully the buzzing won't be too badly. I went back to my old speaker or my old microphone.
I'm not giving up on my old one. Maybe I just used it wrong because I watched a bunch of videos and
it should have worked perfectly. So I will try that again at some point. She's just in a little
So anyhow, before I get into what I'm wearing and all of my fall knitting plans,
I just wanted to mention again, I mentioned this in my last episode,
Knit Hope is a charity in my area collecting hats and scarves. And if you are so inclined,
the actual true, although they accept donations any time of year, the actual true time that they
want to have their dump of hats and scarves is from September 1st to October 1st. So if you are
inclined to knit a hat or a scarf, it would be much needed and appreciated. I am making the
I will put the link below because it is a very easy hat. It is my favorite hat to wear and
it takes a bulky weight yarn. You can use whatever you have in your stash or put a couple of yarns
together and make the weight that you need. But any hat or scarf pattern that you like is perfect.
So I just wanted to mention that. And I think I had something else to say, but maybe it'll come
to me. Okay. What I am wearing, I am wearing the doodles sweater by Yamocha Alexander.
And I initially saw this on Linda's podcast for the fun of knit and Linda made it and it looked
so cute and she made two and her second one she made some modifications to. I don't know why I
didn't listen to her modifications because Linda you were right. So I do have one issue with it,
but I thoroughly enjoy it. You literally, I guess most of her patterns are like this where you just
knit a front and back two pieces, seam them together with an option to add sleeves. I did
not add sleeves on this one mainly because of the issue in the back. And I thought, you know what,
I'm just going to be done with this for right now. You can always, I have more yarn to add it.
I used a Knitter's World yarn that is half cashmere and half silk in the color way,
Beach House. And it is just lovely. Absolutely love it. I have four skeins. I did get a little
bit into the third skein. So I have something to do with this because it's just too yummy to not.
So I have to think of what I can do with that one skein. Maybe make out. So anyhow, I'll show you,
I'll show you what I'm talking about. It is probably intended to be this way because you
want to use a very drapey yarn. But I think because, and this is I think in the modeling
pictures, it could be like that and look, you know, like it wouldn't. But the back is definitely
shorter. Linda did put the short rows back there. And I think that is necessary if you make this,
unless you want it shorter, just because everyone has some slope up here. And that's why we add
short rows to sweaters so they don't sit higher in the back. But I think I will wear it. It is cute.
It matches my papaya Margot ballerina flats, which I have been wearing so much this summer.
But yeah, I will wear it. It might not be my go to sweater, but I definitely will wear it. It's
something that was different for my wardrobe. Super fun to make. Super easy. Like I said,
each piece took a week just knitting. Now the reason I think it gets kind of wonky on the bottom
is because sometimes you're only knitting with one strand and it doesn't, you know,
have the same row gauge I feel like on each side. So it's going to, the single stranded rows
are definitely going to be longer than the double stranded rows. So I think that was an issue.
These are probably intended to pull that up, but mine just didn't. Maybe my yarn was too drapey.
I don't know, but it was a great yarn to knit with. It felt amazing in my hands. And yes,
if you can get your hands on any of this, I heard that it wasn't being shipped to the U.S. right now,
but it is just absolutely dreamy. So I, a few things, I did go down the needle size. I was
happy about that. I didn't want it to be too airy. So I did go down the needle size.
Also because you're using silk and cashmere or whatever sort of linen, I definitely use bamboo
needles. And because I was knitting it flat, I used a nine on one end and my knitting end and
I went down the needle size and I used an eight on my purl end because I knit looser than I purl.
So I want it row out. I did that, which I wonder if it would be that important on a sweater like
this, just because it's very holey, but I like to do that. And I do have interchangeable bamboo
needles, not the metal needles, but so I can do that with on your same cord. So just change the
tip of one and so it's very simple. So, but if you don't like to purl, you probably won't like
this sweater anyhow, but I don't mind purling. I actually enjoy it. It makes me, you know,
focus a little more. I listened to Only the Beautiful by Susanna Meisner during this
knitting time. And yeah, it was a good combination of a knit and a book, but I really liked,
you know, her style of pattern writing and it was a very enjoyable summer knit to make.
And I think that it would be very cute as a sort of dressier sweater as well. I'm probably
going to wear it kind of casual, but it would be cute dressier. Okay. The only other finished knit
I have, did I have, I feel like I have been knitting and I have, but I don't have much to show for it.
Okay. So I have been working on rewriting this. It's finally finished. I'm sending it to the tech
editor and hopefully it will be, if you've purchased this pattern, it will be in your
Ravelry account. If you ever want to make a top down Barbie Lou, this pattern was originally
bottom up and that's how it was written by my mother. And I know a lot of people don't like
that. So I knitted and wrote it and changed the whole thing. I used double Sunday Sandiskarn.
So I used a US seven needle. So it goes very quickly. There's only two sizes, a three to six
month and a six to 12. Although I think this seems like an 18 month. This can definitely go bigger.
And it is sort of vintagey throwback with the high yoke on this. And yes. So I will mention
that when I, so by the next time I get here, it should be on Ravelry. And if you've purchased it,
it should be in your Ravelry account as the updated version of that sweater. Love that.
I've been working on that for a couple of years. So thank you. It was just, I don't know why it was
so difficult to just reverse the pattern from bot. I would have thought it would have been so
easy. Still I'm working on the friend to friend that will definitely be in the fall. I really
would like to have that for you in September too. So that was bottom up also, and I am reversing it
top down with a different yarn instead of the acrylic, but still on a bigger needle, not huge,
but bigger-ish. I think I'm using a US 9 needle for that. So anyhow, I will mention those though
next time when I get here. Okay. My fall knitting plans. I am so excited about the fall. I have
three sweaters ready. Well, one is already cast on and yarn for two more. And I have,
it should be here any minute, Pearl Soho. I ordered some yarn for them to make,
I can't remember the name of it even. It was on a whim. Just ordered it and
I will look it up and let you know, but let's get to what's on my needles. Okay. In my Picatinny bag,
I have, this is the do it yourself bag from Babylon. And I made this last summer. I have
used this you guys so much. I use it as my purse and my knitting bag all in one. And I don't mind
leather in the summer now that it's fall. It's really great. I am making the Sandrow sweater
by Knitting Phlegm. And I am loving working on cables. This is an all over cable sweater.
You start at the back and I actually then put it on a holder early so I could do the two fronts
and join. Sometimes I feel like I don't like the seam to be too far back. So if I do them sort of
in tandem, then it gives me a better fit. So I don't always follow exactly what the pattern says
to knit to the point. I like to kind of try it on and see, but you do on this part,
want the cables to line up. So that might be the only tricky thing. Because when you join in the
round, then you want the cables to be perfectly symmetrical around. So the cables are every 13
rounds. So it's not a complicated pattern at all. I am keeping track. I found this, I was cleaning
my mother's knitting supplies. And when I asked Chad GPT what year he thought this was, I call him
a hymn. He said that this was probably from 1945. He found it in an ad for a newspaper advertisement.
So I, this would be my grandmother's because my mother wasn't knitting then and somebody had put
yarn on it and it's still the same yarn, either my mom or my grandmother's yarn. So I think that's
so special. But I am keeping track of the rows so that I can make sure I don't get off with those
cables because I have a hard time counting the rows in between that twist. So I do have to keep
track of my cables. Anyhow, I am loving it. I wanted a mustard colored all over cabled sweater
and when I did my little personal yarn crawl this summer, I was in Eastern Pennsylvania and I went
to Forever Yarn in Doylestown and I went to Mainline Purls and that's where I purchased this.
So Mainline Purls is on the Mainline and it's just such a beautiful shop. So if you are ever
over in the Philadelphia area, I know they have great knitting shops in that area.
They're so lucky. So this is in the Circus Tonic, which I was not familiar with. Circus Tonic
handmade and it is 65% merino, 20% silk and 15% yak. And yes, I absolutely love this yarn. It is
extremely yummy and I am holding it with Ito Sincere in the color mustard and here's where
the mustard came in because this is like the perfect mustard color. There it is. So I really
wanted this color but held with this, it's pretty much giving me a beautiful mustard. So I'm loving
this. So this was my first fall cast on sweater in August. Yes, I don't think it's ever too early
to cast on for my fall knits. So this is the first one. So that'll be hopefully finished in September.
Yes, it takes me about a month. What does it take you guys to knit a sweater?
About give or take, sometimes a little longer, sometimes a little less depending but a full...
This is oh and the other thing you guys I'm using, so because it's knit flat and I talked about
the interchangeable needles, I do not have metal interchangeable needles. So I use a
US 5 to purl width and a US 6 to knit width and it works just fine. So I, you know,
knit across width. So now I'm ready to purl. So I will just use the whole separate needle,
purl onto this and then when I get back here, I'll use the knitting one and knit onto that.
So it just works really well and then you won't row out and it will all be pretty much uniform
when you go to wear it. You won't see all those, you know, looser rows up on the top part.
So that's, oh and in here because that little cable needle can get lost, I, this is the Babylon
when you purchase. I don't have an affiliate code with this but you can get a gift with purchase
and this watermelon is so cute. So I have that hanging on my picotin and in here I store my
cable needle because as you know you can lose these quickly and this is my absolute favorite
cable needle. I slip it on the short end and then I knit it off of the longer end and
and then it goes back in there. Is there two more rounds? Because I am prone to losing that little
sweet thing. So anyhow, okay, so then I went to Forever Yarn and bought two sweaters
quantity or I was at Forever Yarn first and Yann has a lot of samples which is just amazing
and so Margaret from Boba Laris and I tried on all of these samples and this I tried on
and it had been in my queue since May of 20. Sorry about my printer, I am out of coloring and
you'll really see it in this one. I can't really see what sweater it is but this is the Ula Sweater
by Gregoria Fibers and like I said it's been in my queue so I was very excited to try it on and
know that I was going to really like it and I am using because this is what the sample was
knit out of. I know it seems very bright but doesn't it seem fun? It is just an absolute
dream. There are fibers, I don't know why, oh from the other yarn but it is La Vienna May in
her Merino Super Sock yarn and I'm going to hold this with Margaret's Boba Laris
Brushed Alpaca. It will really tone down the purple. She used a different
mohair with her sock yarn, Yann did, for the sample but I was so excited to receive this
from Margaret so I'm just going to use those together and it will give us the same effect.
Very very excited about that and then so maybe I'll knit that next after my cable sweater. So
that would be my October sweater. Okay and then my November sweater will be this. So Other Loops
has the Hy-Vee Neck and I know you can't see anything here what am I showing you this for
but I will put a picture on the screen. It was so cued on and I tried it on in her sample and
this is the yarn she used and I don't this yarn is new to me I don't even know how to pronounce it.
Okay here it is and this is in the color charcoal and I am going to pair it with their
let's see this is called the fuzzy and this is 54% baby alpaca 22% super kid mohair and 2%
mulberry silk. So that will be paired with this and this I didn't don't think I told you this is
merino and suri alpaca. So that would be the V-neck sweater and that will take us to December.
So those are my fall knitting plans. How about you do you have some really I have oh and I
ordered stuff from Purl Soho. It should be here any minute wish it was here I don't even know
the name of the sweater it was just on a whim I just was watching what was I watching
no hold on okay I was watching the roaming knitter and she was making the squam sweater
and I thought it was so cute uh a simple yoke sweater although you know I'm a big raglan fan
I hope I like it um usually these yoke sweaters don't fit me that well but we'll see it's very
cute I ordered those colors from Purl Soho so it was one of those I know you guys have it too I
try to not order while I'm watching a video really hard but sometimes you're like yes I will I will
love that I see myself in that sweater and that sweater in my wardrobe so anyhow I ordered that
uh this is a bag from Forever Yarn love these bags I think that's just so cute so
anyhow you guys um I didn't bring my needle point to show you but I have been stitching on those
two fat soap boat lambs from Elizabeth Bradley and I am loving it I really want to try to finish
that by the end of September too so we'll see I have some traveling that I'm going to be doing
in September not much and I really haven't been doing much traveling at all since the last time
I saw you I think I've been home the whole time Libby came home for about 10 days and we just had
a blast she wasn't working on any knitting she was needle pointing uh she brought her shorts home but
she was working in the day and then in the evening she wanted to needle point and so I didn't push
uh but she wants to get her shorts you know off of the needles or just move on to a new project
I think she needs to um rework that whole short idea so anyhow uh that is all you guys I don't
really have much more to tell you but I hope you are loving what you're working on and I would
love to know if you have some things for the fall in your queue or you know you already started
something for the fall because yeah I'm very excited to have some you know heavier sweaters
on my needles although I only had took a break and had one lighter sweater in between I did not
knit any summer knits this year and I was okay with that I still want to make another hello friend
vest and uh I need a black vest need but I really wanted a black vest so it'll probably be the hello
front anyhow I will see you guys back here very soon and remember you always have a friend to knit
all right take care guys bye
