94: KINABATANGAN RIVER CRUISE- Borneo Malaysia: Orangutans, Proboscis Monkeys, Pygmy Elephants

Man, that hurt. Welcome to the jungle. Bye-bye, Simforna. What are we doing today? We are on the way to Sepaloc Jungle Resort by way of Sandakan. It will take us six hours to get there as the bus makes a couple of rest stops along the way. Upon arrival in Sandakan, we booked a grab taxi and went straight to the resort. There it is. Thank you, sir. We have a live orangutan in our room and you all said no problem. Oh, did they? They knew I was coming. They knew I... Thankfully, the resort is only a 10-minute walk from the Orangutan Rehabilitation Center. We dropped our bags and made a beeline for the entrance, hoping to have some great encounters with these beautiful creatures. You have a camera ticket. I'm sorry? Camera ticket. You gotta be kidding me. You didn't buy a ticket for the camera. There are two kinds of orangutans in the world. One is from Borneo and the other from Sumatra. The name orangutan is derived from the Malay words orang meaning man and hutan meaning forest. And to see these amazing creatures in their natural habitat, you will have to venture into the forest and hope to get lucky. The reason is because more than 50% of the orangutan population has died due to deforestation and air pollution. That is why the rehab center was founded in 1964 to save orphaned orangutans. The site is 43 square kilometers of protected land at the edge of the Kabili Sepalak Forest. Today, around 60 to 80 orangutans are living free in the reserve. Recently rehabilitated individuals have their diet supplemented by daily feedings. The additional food supplied by the center is purposefully designed to be monotonous so as to encourage the apes to start to forage for themselves. In the nursery, the orangutans are more protected and given a buddy to replace the instruction normally received from their mother. In contrast, in the wild, after a gestation of eight and a half months, orangutan babies stay with their mothers for up to six years while they are taught the skills they need to survive, the most important of which is climbing. And off we go into the jungle to our jungle restaurant. Here we have fried prawns and like a chili garlic sauce is delicious. And this this is like pumpkin or jungle fern and garlic. After only one day at the resort, we joined a two day, one night tour with the renowned Mr. Aji on the Kinabatangan River, located two hours from Sepalak. The river is home to an incredible variety of wildlife, but most people go to see the orangutans, proboscis monkeys and pygmy elephants. These fruits only three times in one year's fruitings. And then if they're not fruitings times, what do orangutans eat? They come down, they come down, they're looking for flower, grass like this, you know, they eat this one flower, young leaf, vegetables, you know, ginger in the ground. When they come down, they can sick, sick because in the ground here already mixed with chemical. Where's the chemical come from? Palm oil plantations. So one can be to silver langur monkey. In Borneo, they have four different species. Wow, this is so good. Only a male is long nose, yeah? Female small. This is female. They're living in a group, the big group more than 10. On our final morning on the river, we were back in the boat to see what wildlife we could observe before eating breakfast and driving back into town to catch the bus to Kota Kinabalu. We thoroughly enjoyed our time on the river, observing wildlife in their natural habitat, making new friends, and knocking off another item from our bucket list.
