Once you complete the free baseline assessment you'll have an opportunity to book a 1:1 call with me to discuss exactly how to get a grade 7-9 in Year 11
The speaker argues that the stigma surrounding private tuition—the idea that it is only for \"dumb\" or struggling students—is a misconception that hinders academic success. By analyzing data from the Sutton Trust, the speaker demonstrates that high-achieving students in grammar and private schools frequently use tutoring to secure top grades and prepare for future academic transitions.
Hating tuition is going to cost you your dream grades. There is a secret that private schools
and grammar schools have that allow them to get the top grades and it's not just the fact that
they're private or grammar schools and I'm going to take you through that and if you watch to the
end you'll hopefully understand why I made this video and why it's really really important for you
to really get rid of this stigma against getting tutoring or just getting help in general. The
reason why I mention this is I work at a regular state school and a lot of students will not want
to get tuition for various reasons. Sometimes it's cost and again if you stick to the end I'll
show you how you can actually reduce the cost of tuition by massively, maybe even get it for free,
but also just because there's like a stigma against it that it's like bad or it means
you're dumb or whatever. So the first thing I'm going to do is I'm going to prove my claim
by showing you some research from the Sutton Trust that I've kind of summarised and I'll
put a link to the actual article in the description so you can check it for yourself.
So here's the first thing I want to show you. So here's the three types of schools,
so independent, grammar, comprehensive. Independent is what most people would call
private schools. Then grammar schools are the ones we have to take entrance exams,
they're very selective, so technically the smart students in massive air quotes tend to go there
and comprehensive is just a normal state school and over here it says that for year 10 or 11,
so this isn't including A-levels or anything like that, around 18% of students will get tuition.
Then we look at grammar schools and again bearing in mind that grammar schools are meant to be
the smartest people in the world, right, because they go through an entrance exam,
they do all this stuff, they get exceptionally good grades, mostly nines at GCSE and mostly
A-levels at A-level, almost a quarter of them get tuition. Now to compare this, that's roughly 33%
more students getting tuition at a grammar school than at a regular state school.
So, okay, bear that in mind. Now for independent schools, why is it very similar? Simply put,
because with private schools, when you pay for private schools, they do have tuition built into
the school itself. So you'll have like sessions after school with the teacher, small group
sessions, you get private tuition when you go to private school automatically, so then why would
you also pay for private tuition? So that's why this number is relatively low. So that's the first
thing that this shows me, is tuition is not for dumb students, it's not for students that are
weak, it's not even necessarily for students that are falling behind. A lot of these students are
going to get top grades regardless. The reason why they get tuition is to ensure that they get those
grade 8s and 9s and A's and A stars, but also to help them with the next step. So for example,
in year 10 and 11, they will start tutoring to prepare them for A-levels, A-level maths or A-level
sciences, and then A-levels they'll get tuition that helps them with university entry exams as
well. There's research showing, again you can look on the link to see this, that 50% of these people,
it is for that particular year group, so 50% of them get tuition to help them with that current
kind of thing they're doing, so they're doing GCSEs to help with GCSEs. So again, to ensure these top
grades, a quarter of people are already in grammar school who already should be really really smart
Okay, interesting. Here's the next thing that's, again, very interesting. So when they say non-selective
schools, this means not grammar schools. Affluent means wealthy, so 31% use the tutors, whereas 12%
get deprived. So when we look at this statistic back here, it averages out 18%, the actual numbers are
if you're wealthy, it's around a third of students that get tuition, and if you're not wealthy,
it's around 12%, which means it averages out 18% because there's more people that aren't affluent
than there are people who are affluent. So then you're thinking, okay, so the smartest students
get tuition, and also the students who have parents that are extremely successful, and maybe they've
gone to university and they've done all this stuff, are also getting tuition. So this kind of disproves
the part about tuition only being for dumb students, right? Instead it seems to be for students
that really want to achieve those top grades and that want a solid path forward, because tuition
doesn't just help with getting good grades, you also have access to a person who is invested in
your educational journey. So what you want to do in the future, what careers you want to do,
university entry exam preparation, which schools don't necessarily help with that much.
The last one, this is a bit longer, I'm not going to lie to you, but just have a look at this.
The main thing I want you to look at is pupils with a degree-educated parents are more likely
to get tutors, so over a quarter of them. So again, students that have parents who have been
through the education system and have been very successful, so they've done GCSEs, they've gone
through A-levels, they've gone and got degrees at universities, they're more likely to get their
students, their children tuition rather than people that don't. In fact, they're twice as
so 100% more likely to get tuition. This is why if you're going to a regular school,
so a perfectly ordinary school, maybe even a bad school or whatever, there is a massive
stigma against tuition and it is killing accomplishment. Because the thing is,
if you're at the top of your score, you're in set one for everything at your school,
it doesn't necessarily mean you're going to get top grades. There are top sets that get grades
6s and 7s instead of the 8s and 9s they should be getting. A big part of that comes from the
fact that when I say to a student, okay well have you thought about getting tuition,
they normally react with disgust or their parents don't seem to really get the idea behind it and
it's also treated like a punishment. But the reality is, getting tuition is something that
the most successful people in our society are doing and so it makes sense for you to also get
tuition. Because again, what do you do? For example, if you wanted to get in really good
shape, you're going to take advice from people who are in really good shape. So if you want to
be really successful, it makes sense to take advice from people who are really successful
in whatever you do. Now, I know that this is coming across as like, oh I'm just kind of
shilling tuition. It's not. Not everyone needs tuition. There are students that go through and
get top grades without tutoring, that's completely fine. My point of this video is not, hey you
should definitely get tuition otherwise you're unsuccessful. It's, you should be open to the
idea of tuition. So for example, if you're doing GCSE maths or A-level maths or GCSE English or
whatever and you're finding it hard, tuition is the sensible next thing to do. Because again,
it could be that you don't understand the way your teacher's teaching you, maybe your teacher's
been absent for a long period of time, it could be anything. Maybe that you were absent for a
Whatever the reason is, getting tuition doesn't mean that you're dumb, it doesn't, it's not
negative at all. Now in terms of the cost thing, cost can be very very difficult with tuition,
I understand that. One thing that I'm going to put in the link is the link to my referral program
in the description, where you can join tuition and if you refer other people you get discounts
up to it being completely free for the entire time. I have got a short on that that I'll link
in the description as well just to give you more information. But again, if money is a concern,
look for these referral programs. So again, I run one personally, where you get 20% off for
every student you refer for as long as they attend tuition. So for example, if you recommend five
friends, you get free tuition the entire time, no questions asked. There are other people that
also offer a similar thing, I'm sure, if you look online, but you can also ask tutors if they're
willing to do that. So email them and say, okay I want tuition with you, can I get a discount if I
recommend you to other people? So keep that in mind, I'll leave the links to all of this
in the description. I wanted to make this really quick video just to point out,
do not be super negative against tuition.
