While Andre Sweat showed promising dominance in his limited return, the team struggles with a disastrous kicking performance from Jason Sanders and a concerning lack of depth and reliability at the interior offensive line and backup quarterback positions.
Jets just wrapped up their preseason finale against the Giants.
I just wrapped up my postgame live stream and I have some takeaways that I want to talk
about.
And let's just say that Darren Muge probably has a lot of work to do over the next 48 hours.
The Jets have some roster holes they need to address and we have some takeaways to talk
about.
So let's do that.
Let's talk about the most obvious of those needs, man, that a Jets need a kicker.
Like, oh my God, Jason Sanders officially won the Jets kicker battle this week when
the Jets waved Cade York and he went into this game pretty much locked in as the Jets
week one kicker.
Or at least that's what the team was hoping.
And then he went on to miss an extra point to miss a 54 yarder short by like five yards,
six yards.
Like it wasn't even close.
And he also booted a kick into the end zone for a touchback, which that's not what you
want to do.
This was a disastrous performance from Jason Sanders.
Aaron Glenn did say after the game that the Jets are confident in Sanders and they like
what he's put on tape this summer.
I don't buy it.
I don't believe it.
I don't think Jason Sanders will be the Jets week one kicker.
So whether they're bringing in someone from the Colts or from the Saints, or maybe Ben
Sauls, who officially just lost the Giants kicker battle, either way, it needs to be
somebody that is not Jason Sanders.
What else the Jets need?
They need a backup center because Xavier Newman is not a backup center.
He's just not a center.
I think he had three or four bad snaps in his game, multiple of which ended up on the
dirt.
It is a disaster waiting to happen.
And the Jets really need to address their interior offensive line depth, both because
of Newman and because of an unfortunate injury.
His rookie six round guard, Inez Cooper left the game early with a shoulder injury that
looks pretty significant, which means that the Jets only have one backup interior offensive
lineman projected to make their 53, and that is Xavier Newman.
And that is not good.
I would expect the Jets to be very active on the waiver wire, scouring and looking around
for interior offensive line depth.
Don't be surprised if the Jets add multiple bodies to their offensive line room this weekend.
In a positive takeaway, welcome back to Andre Sweat.
Sweat was one of only, I think, two or three Jets starters to play in this game.
I think he played 11 total snaps and he was having his way with the Giants starting interior
offensive line of John Runyon, John Michael Schmitz, who I can't believe he's still starting
center in this league.
And rookie Francis Maui Noah Sweat was dominating, but of course, missed most of the summer.
And this was his only preseason action.
So it was nice to see him hit the ground running.
And he is going to be a big, both physically and metaphorically part of this Jets defense
in 2026.
And there's Cade Klubnick.
Look, I'll probably make a whole separate video evaluating his performance in this game
because there's shades of gray, right?
Like there's too much to condense in this short clip, but I will say this.
I don't think I'm as confident in Cade Klubnick as the Jets QB2 entering 2026 as the Jets
staff appears to be.
Look, Klubnick finished strong with an impressive final drive at the end of that first half.
Even if it didn't result in points, he had a couple of really nice throws and there was
one that was called back.
Like, I think he looked good on that drive prior to that point, though it was tough.
Look, he's a day three rookie.
He shouldn't be ready for actual NFL reps yet.
That's not an indictment on him or of the pick or what it means for his future.
He's just not ready yet.
And look, it's one of those things that it's not a big deal until it becomes a big deal.
And he's forced to play.
And I hope for the Jets sake that he's more ready to play than we think he is, because
I have my doubts.
