Amy shares her process for transitioning her master bedroom from summer to early fall, focusing on creating a cozy atmosphere. By utilizing a palette of olive green, rich browns, and cognac, and prioritizing existing decor over new purchases, she refreshes the space with warm textures and intentional layering to prepare for the cooler months.
Hi sweet friends! It's Amy and welcome back. Today we are upstairs in my master bedroom.
I haven't really decorated much in here since spring, so I think it's just time to refresh
the space and make it more cozy for the cooler months soon to come. If you missed my last couple
of videos, we've been transitioning our home from late summer into early fall, and with that I like
to bring in moodier colors like olive green, rich browns, of course neutrals, and then some pops of
either like a mustard yellow or cognac to really just warm up and cozy up the space. So that's
exactly what I plan to do here in our master bedroom as well. As the cooler months approach,
I like to switch out the materials that I use. So I like to choose fabrics that are a little bit more
thick. So cable knits, maybe velvets, just something that's a little bit more warm and cozy.
So with that being said, I'm super excited to get started today. So go ahead, maybe grab a cup of
coffee, whatever your choice is, and sit down, relax, and let's decorate for early fall. So before we get
started, I wanted to give you a little look at where the bedroom has been for the last little while.
Honestly, not much has changed since the last time we decorated in here. Everything has pretty much
stayed right where I left it. So this morning, I'm going to start by clearing off all of the decor
and giving myself a completely blank slate. I'll also clean the area really well off camera before
we get started. I always enjoy doing this when I'm changing things up for a new season. Instead of
trying to work around what's already here, clearing everything away gives me a chance to look at the
room with fresh eyes and decide what I really want to bring back in. I'm also going to strip the bed
and get all of the bedding into the laundry. Once everything is cleared and cleaned, we can finally
get into the fun part, decorating. And I'm going to start with the wall above our bed. I actually have
an idea for this wall that's a little different from what I've did before. I have two sets of
these really pretty candle sconces that I've had for years. I actually got them back when I was a
Southern Living and Home Consultant. Instead of making new holes in the wall, I'm going to use the
monkey hooks in the holes that are already there to get that sconces hung. So fingers crossed,
everything will look okay. I do have a piece of artwork that I'm planning to use between them, but
I'm not completely sure about the spacing just yet. If the sconces feel a little too far apart,
once the artwork is in place, I may bring them in closer, but they may end up looking just fine
where they are. We'll see. That's part of the fun of decorating. You can always make changes
if you're not completely happy. Here's the print that I want to hang above the bed. I really love
the muted colors in this one. It has some of that soft olive green, those rich browns, and just a
hint of warm cognac color. To hang this on the wall, you'll see that I already have one side of
the velcro command strips attached to the back of the frame. So all I need to do is add that piece
that will attach to the wall. Since I change out my artwork pretty frequently, this has become one
of my favorite ways to hang pieces without continually putting new holes in the walls.
I also wanted to mention that for this summer to fall transition, I'm mainly using older pieces.
I'm pulling pieces from other rooms and going through my decor storage to find things that I
can use in a different way. I believe I'm only using two new items in the bedroom today, so you
definitely don't have to buy a lot of new decor to give a room a completely different look for the
season. Now as always, I'll do my best to link anything I can find or something similar down
below in the description box in case you see something that you'd like to use in your own home.
I'm going to be adding lots of comfy cozy layers here and you may wonder why I'm actually placing
the quilt with the pattern side facing down toward the mattress. The reason I do this is so that when
I fold it back, you'll actually see the pattern peeking through. I really like that little detail
because it adds interest without being too overwhelming when the bed is fully made.
Next, I'll be adding this velvety soft olive green quilt on top and I love that both the quilt
and the comforter have a subtle vertical striping. I think that detail coordinates so beautifully
together and gives everything a really cohesive layered look without it feeling too matchy matchy.
And again, I'm really leaning to that soft olive green throughout the space. I'm trying to pull
the colors that I see in the artwork and bring them down into the bedding so that everything
feels connected. It just creates that really calm intentional look that I love for this early fall
transition. Mixing patterns is a great way to get that layered designer look but it can sometimes
be a little tricky. I tend to stick mostly with solids and when I do mix patterns, I try to keep
the colors similar. So here, the duvet cover that I added to the end of the bed has a pretty brown
and cream gingham while the quilt is a completely different pattern but has those same warm tones.
Keeping the color palette consistent lets the patterns work together without making the bed
feel too busy. And one of the two new pieces, of course, had to be a billow. I just couldn't
resist. I picked this one up from Walmart. I definitely have a problem when it comes to billows
so the next time we're out shopping together, you all are going to have to stop me from bringing
another one home. To style the top of the chest of drawers, I wanted to bring in a mix of materials
and textures. I started with these soft brown florals in a cream vase. Then I added a book
with black lettering that I'll complement with a few black metal candlestick holders. I also brought
in the sculptural rattan vase for some warmth and texture and the color ties back to the pillow and
throw on the bed. I also wanted to bring in a touch of gold so how I remembered I had this
really pretty bowl that I picked up during the summer from HomeGoods. I love its ribbed detailing
and etched design and I think it just finishes off the whole look. Over the years, some of my
florals and garlands have naturally lost a few leaves and little pieces and instead of throwing
those away, I like to keep them in a ziplock bag to use as filler and other arrangements.
This little bundle actually came from an old garland. I gathered those loose pieces together
and secured them with some floral wire. I'm going to use them as a base for this arrangement. I'll
add a grouping of brown hydrangeas and then I'll come back in with some individual straggler pieces
and fill in any bare spots and give the arrangement a little bit more fullness and interest. It's a
simple way to make use of those little pieces that might otherwise get thrown away. Next,
I have a little project that I want to try. You may remember these small picture frames that I
used in my spring decorating, but I thought it would be fun to change out the prints and create
some artwork of my own. I'm going to use this watercolor paper from Walmart because I really
love the texture it has. I found a couple of images on Canva that I thought would work beautifully
with the early fall colors we're using in the room. I simply printed them to size on the watercolor
paper, cut them out, and placed them in the frames, keeping the original behind the new print
just in case I wanted to reuse them in the future. I love how the texture of the paper gives this
simple printed image more of an authentic art-like quality. In this way, I can get exactly the look
I'm wanting while reusing frames I already have and whenever I'm ready for a change, I can simply
create another print or use them all over again. For Scott's nightstand, I'm bringing in two amber
glass bottles. I love pulling these out for fall because they add such a pretty warmth. I'll drape
a few of those leftover garland pieces over one of the bottles, then finish with a candle and a
little trunk, which is perfect for holding all of those miscellaneous things that come out of Scott's
pockets at the end of the day. Moving over to our long dresser, I'm going to leave the artwork just
as it is. These prints have stayed here through several seasons because they're neutral enough
to work pretty much year-round, and honestly, I love having a few things that I don't need to
change every time I decorate. Since this is such a long surface, I like to think of it almost like a
collection of smaller moments rather than trying to fill every inch. I'll vary the heights and
textures as I work my way across, leaving a little breathing room in between. That keeps your eye
moving along the dresser without everything feeling too lined up or crowded. The last little
corner we'll decorate together today is the seating area in our bedroom. The green faux tree just
isn't fitting the direction the room is going anymore, so I'm going to remove that and put it
into our spare bedroom for now and switch out the artwork as well. The floral print that's here is
actually a special piece that came from Scott's grandma. I love bringing it out during the spring
and summer when those brighter colors and florals feel just right, but for early fall, I'm going to
tuck it away and bring in something a little bit more neutral that works better with the warmer
color palette we've created throughout the room. I'll put the chair back in its place, slide the
mirror over just a little bit, and move the accent table to the opposite side just to make a few
little changes. This continues to be a sweet little spot here in our bedroom. I love sitting here in
the morning with a cup of coffee, maybe reading a devotional, and of course, if Nyla wanders in with
one of her toys, it's also a perfect spot to sit and toss a toy back and forth with her for a little
while. Inside the vase, I'm using my second new find for the room, these really pretty blackberry
stems. Now here's a little tip. Whenever you're working with faux florals, take a minute to bend
and shape every little branch rather than leaving the stem straight and flat. So as you can see,
here's one that I've already bent, and then here is how it comes, really straight and stiff. I think
giving those curves to the branches makes them look so much more natural, but they also make
your arrangement look fuller without needing nearly as many stems. I'll even intertwine some of the
branches together as I'm shaping them. That helps them support one another and stand up beautifully
in the vase, a lot of times without needing any floral foam or filler at all. So before we wrap
things up, let's take one more look around the room and enjoy all those cozy little details we
created together. I definitely feel that the room is warmer and cozier now, and I love that so much
of what we used today was already here in our house. Moving things around and seeing older pieces
in a new way can sometimes be just as exciting as bringing in something new. All right sweet
friends, that pretty much wraps up the decorating here in our master bedroom for early fall.
I hope that you've enjoyed seeing how I'm transitioning during the season and that I
gave you maybe some new ideas that you can use in your homes. Now if you did enjoy today's video,
I'd appreciate a big thumbs up, and remember if you are subscribed already, make sure your
notification bell is set to all so that when I do post a new video, you'll be the first to see it.
If you are new and enjoyed what you saw today, I would love if you would join me. We're about to
kick off all things fall, all the pumpkins, squirrels, acorns, and beautiful fall foliage, so that should
be super fun. It's my favorite season to decorate for, and I would love for you to join me. As always,
I love to end our time together by sharing God's word. Today I'll be reading from Proverbs chapter 3
verse 24. When you lie down, you will not be afraid. When you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
Well, I thank you again so much for joining me today and taking a little bit of time out of your
day to spend it with me. Well, I hope you have a really great rest of your day, and I'll see
you real soon in my next one. Take care, and God bless, friends. Bye!
