There's a simplicity about backpacking that makes it really easy and fun to do.
And now that we've done a backpacking trip in Colorado we're pretty much hooked.
Jocelyn's been really eager to get out on the trail again so we're back in California now
but we're doing a one up in the Shasta area, northern California.
And right now we're actually going along the Pacific Crest Trail
which is a trail that goes the entire length of the west coast.
It's pretty cool. I don't think I'll ever do the entire trail
because that's probably a couple thousand miles but we're doing a little piece of it.
And on this video we're hiking to several lakes.
There's supposed to be up to seven lakes around here and hopefully there's some fish.
I don't know how the fishing is around here but usually the alpine lakes have hungry trout.
Roscoe's excited. He's got his pack all packed up.
He's got his food in there.
The starting elevation on this one is about 6,500 feet elevation gain.
I think it's about a thousand feet of elevation gain.
Maybe, what was it, eight, nine miles.
Let's go. Keep going. Keep moving.
It's actually pretty nice. It's about probably like 70, 75 degrees at the moment.
Nice and cool. A little bit breezy too.
So we got perfect conditions at the moment but I'm sure we'll work up a sweat
if we got a nice hike ahead of us.
This is actually a pretty good incline we're starting off with.
We're already huffing and puffing but look at this.
Beautiful views already.
That's what it's about.
I like it when it's sunny.
Roscoe uses Jocelyn as shade.
Good job, buddy. You're so smart.
Well, we already have a beautiful view of Mount Shasta right next to us.
That's pretty sweet.
Most of the snow is all melted now that it's late summer but still beautiful.
All right, a little bit of shade.
Let's get some water.
I'm carrying two liters of water.
Figured this hike is like on a ridge.
There's not going to be any streams or rivers until we get closer to the lake.
And here we go again.
Look how nice this is.
Can't get over it.
Snack time.
A little snack time with the view.
Salami cheese.
One tiny piece of cheese.
Fruit boy.
Two miles down.
We're feeling good.
Good little incline here.
Now that's a view.
It's nice having these because all the water goes back down.
Especially if he doesn't want water.
He's not wasting it.
We're starting to see the lakes down there.
This is going to drop us in to where the lakes are.
I know you guys can't see it yet but it's looking good.
It's looking good.
Okay the first lake should be up and over this hump here.
It's a steep one.
Here we go.
There it is.
Oh yeah.
Lake number one.
Oh yeah.
Nice.
Oh beautiful.
I could fish here or I could wait till the next lakes.
I might just do a quick dip in this one and then keep going.
Good boy.
Hi bud.
That's a good boy.
Oh that's nice.
Okay.
That was a nice little dip.
Ross was like I don't want to leave.
But we're going to keep going.
And we're going to go to the next lake.
And that's where we're going to have lunch.
And I can start fishing too.
And Roscoe can take his nap.
There's the lake.
It's down there.
Probably go to that one.
Oh there's two there.
Two lakes right there.
There's another little tiny one right there.
And there's a bigger one over on that end.
This peak right here is super cool too.
Take a look at that.
Yeah he's super excited.
He's like yes another lake.
This is nice.
Now that's an alpine lake.
Yeah.
Might have brought the wrong canister.
This one's only half.
All right we're going to get a little food in our system first.
And we're doing the iron goat provisions backpacking meals again.
Water is boiling.
Don't want to waste any of that fuel.
I've been keeping an eye out to see if I can spot any fish rising but
haven't seen anything yet.
All right my waffle tofu should be ready.
Nice.
This is what makes backpacking really easy and simple.
Just heat and water.
And I will start making my own backpacking meals too.
Roscoe found a little sun patch and he died.
Right now the plan is we're going to go find a spot that we're going to camp tonight.
Set up camp and then we'll go fish.
Like this is the one of the bigger ones and then there's a couple smaller ones.
And then down that way I think there's one that's slightly bigger than this lake.
So if there's nothing here we can check out the other ones too.
All right we found our spot.
All right our camp is set up.
We're gonna go actually to the further lake right now and try to fish that area.
And then if nothing's there we'll come back to this one where we were.
And hopefully we'll catch a fish somewhere.
We've been hiking for about half an hour.
I'm almost done an extra mile trying to get to this lake.
Everything just seems to be overgrown.
So I've just been kind of trying to look for the trail.
But kind of bushwhacking and climbing these logs all at the same time.
So it's taking a while and it's a little challenge getting to this next lake.
Or actually we've passed maybe two or three small lakes.
But figured it wasn't worth stopping at those little ones.
Go to the bigger one instead.
Oh yeah I finally see it and it is much bigger.
Oh yeah this is right at the base of that peak that I was saying looks really cool.
Take a look at that.
That was a hot hike.
We just pulled up to this lake and apparently this part is actually private property.
There's a private property sign.
And then Jocelyn said there's a sign right there that says no fishing.
And that's some BS.
It doesn't say anything on the...
Yeah that's so bizarre.
It doesn't say anything but...
How can it be private property?
Oh the road right here is private.
The road on that side it says private.
It's very disappointing we can't stay here.
I know we gotta hike a mile back now.
Came all this way for nothing.
Come on let's get up.
Get up.
He's so tired.
That is so nice.
Oh good boy.
We're ready.
Let's get back.
Goodbye lake.
Oh well that sucked.
That was...
Man that was a lot of effort for nothing.
And here's a...
Here's another lake right here.
Pretty small lake.
And looking pretty shallow most of it.
Made it back to our lunch spot lake.
And it is...
This one is beautiful.
This may be a potential spot.
Nice deep drop off right here.
Big log.
All right so what are we thinking here?
I see a lot of dragonflies.
Although I don't see any fish hitting the surface still.
I haven't seen a single one.
We could do two of them below the dry fly.
One like this.
And maybe a tiny, tiny zebra midge.
There we go right there.
Come on fish.
Hoping there's fish under this log.
Ross could leave it.
Oh no.
This is quite dense.
He made it.
Let's fish on this log.
See if we can at least get on the board.
Oh no.
He said don't make fun of him.
He said it happens to the best of us.
Roscoe's trying to make his way back by himself.
Dawson's over there.
Nothing.
Nothing yet.
What do these fish want?
Nothing.
Nothing's under there.
We just got to keep trying.
Oh man I tried several things but no luck.
And I only brought the fly rod this time.
No spinning rod.
Thought I could do it again.
But no luck on this one.
Oh man.
Well it's dinner time for us.
It's about 7 p.m right now.
And it's dinner time for Roscoe too.
And you know how we love feeding Roscoe nothing but the best.
Like in the last backpacking video we fed him trout straight from the lake.
We love feeding him fresh food.
Unfortunately we didn't get one this time.
But lucky enough today we have Roscoe's sponsor.
Sundaes.
And Sundaes is so good.
And I love it because it's real food you know.
We can still make sure that he's getting the best of the best with Sundaes.
And we have the fish recipe for him today.
And I know he's super hungry right now.
Oh wait wait wait.
Oh Roscoe!
Wait buddy.
Why would you do that?
Sundaes gets him crazy.
He knows it's fresh food.
He knows it's delicious.
And look how good he is.
He's already just sitting down waiting.
Yeah he could put a little water in here.
We like to just add a little water just to give him some hydration.
Because he doesn't drink too much water himself.
He needs a lot of water out here.
And oh my gosh.
He's literally drooling right now.
I'm not gonna make him suffer.
I'm gonna let him eat right now.
But we'll tell you more about Sundaes right now.
Okay buddy.
Itadakimasu.
He eats Sundaes so fast we have to feed it to him in a slow feeder.
Even this one right here is a slow feeder.
If you can see it's got the little grooves in there.
Little nubs that stick out to make it a little bit harder to eat.
And make him take a little bit more time to eat.
Just so he's not just engulfing everything in one bite.
But he would if he could.
This one he's eating today is whitefish and salmon as the primary protein.
And they use whole ingredients like a pumpkin, like kale, like spinach.
Things that I put in his food when I make fresh homemade stuff too.
With Sundaes you can get that all in the convenient air dried version.
And it's super easy.
You feed him just like you would kibble.
You just scoop it out and dump it in the bowl.
But you know with Sundaes you're getting the best fresh food.
Fresh ingredients and amazing quality.
And obviously Roscoe loves it.
He just burped.
He's crazy for it.
Now that he's had his dinner he's completely satisfied with his meal.
You like that?
You might like that even more than the fresh fish.
Your dog deserves a diet as fresh and nutritious as yours.

All the good boys and good girls out there deserve the best.
Thanks Sundaes for sponsoring this video.
And Roscoe says thank you.
All right guys I've had my dry fly out the whole time but no luck.
I just rigged up something else and kind of just have it ready for tomorrow morning.
No catch and cook tonight.
But we got Japanese curry.
Oh smells good.
Oh yeah that's really good.
I gotta see if I can make it just as good or even better.
That would be cool.
Yeah next thing I gotta get is a freeze dryer.
I don't know if tamales would dehydrate well.
That would be cool.
But they're pretty like dense.
Or maybe like a burrito bowl.
Mmm burrito bowl.
Yeah that would definitely be doable.
Yeah.
With like fall sun.
Yeah.
Can you use Lengua?
What if you use Lengua that would be so good.
Imagine dehydrating Menudo.
Dehydrated Menudo?
Yeah I feel like you would love that on a mountain.
That would be so good.
Let me know in the comments what dishes you would make.
You would freeze dry for the backpacking.
I'd like to hear what what you think and give me some good ideas.
Moving on to our second course dessert.
Arroz con leche.
Oh it's got like little strawberries.
Strawberry bits in there too.
Well we have a little bit of light left so
might as well give it a try at the smaller lake right here.
See if we see any more fish than the other lake.
Then maybe I'll make a decision on which lake to try in the morning.
The heck is that a beaver?
No I think they're just ducks or some kind of birds.
Damn it.
Well lasted about 10 seconds and back casted right up into that branch up there.
No should have just stuck with the roll casts.
Maybe more of a pond really.
There's lily pads.
No fish though.
Well guys this flash is insanely bright but here we are in our tent.
As you can see Roscoe has claimed the most space in here and
I have the least.
Dawson's got the least.
I have at least enough space over here.
But yeah I think we're gonna call it a night and we'll see you in the morning.
Good night.
Okay the sun is just coming up.
Good morning.
Let's go catch a fish.
I got 35% battery to catch a fish.
Slept pretty well besides the fact that Roscoe woke me up at like
5 a.m to take him outside and it was for nothing.
He just wanted to go outside.
He was just bored and he just woke up and he was like all right let's go.
And then so I went back went back to bed and then kind of slept in a little bit.
After that it's like 6 40 right now.
Look at this reflection is crispy right now.
Oh man can't even see the water.
It's just a mirror.
Wow that's insane.
Got a small black mosquito on just in my sweats to start this morning.
Right here behind me here.
I haven't seen a single fish hit the surface.
Me and Roscoe walked to the other side of the lake.
We were started over there.
We walked to this side now and trying this side but nothing.
I haven't seen a single fish jump or anything this morning.
Well guys no luck.
The fishing unfortunately.
But I do have sausage.
I didn't bring any oil but the sausage should have enough fat on its own.
Well we can't get them every time.
I was gonna make a some delicious paella while backpacking.
It was gonna be epic.
Ruined my plans.
Beautiful lake regardless.
I'll try another lake maybe a bigger lake next time.
And I also have some pre-cut bell peppers.
All right it's about done.
Now I'm gonna add this to my chilaquiles breakfast.
Now we gotta enjoy our breakfast and then we gotta hit the trail.
Because we got we got some hiking to do and and it's gonna be very hot.
So we gotta get out of here before it gets too hot.
One more bell pepper.
A couple more.
All right Roscoe come on.
You ready?
It's time buddy.
It's time.
Well guys unfortunately didn't get a fish.
You know what amazing trip still.
Wouldn't be realistic if I caught a fish every single time.
Well guys I think yeah it's gonna be it's gonna be it for this one.
We got a nice hike out of here.
Just an overnight quick one on this trip.
But next time I'm making my own backpacking meals.
Anyways thanks for watching.
If you like the video make sure you hit that thumbs up.
Subscribe and we'll see you guys on the next one.
Peace.
