Tonight, a woman is behind bars. This woman accused of scamming an elderly person out
of thousands of dollars. Fox 35's Chancellor Nguyen shows us how the victim's quick thinking
helped deputies make this arrest.
This is Amoya Jameson. Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chilwood says she lied to a 74-year-old
woman and is accused of scamming her out of $8,000.
It turns out to be a Jamaican national who overstayed her work visa is pulling out of
the driveway. They stop her, they question her, and eventually she said, yeah, you got
me and hands over the $8,000.
According to an arrest report, the victim says she was contacted by someone claiming
her bank account was compromised and telling her to pack $8,000 cash into a box for pickup.
Investigators say an innocent delivery driver ordered by the alleged scammers picked up
the box, then dropped off the cash at a home. Realizing something wasn't right, the victim
called 911 with the driver's license plate, leading deputies straight to his home.
He tells us where he dropped the money off. We go to that house and as we're getting there,
she's pulling out. So we would eventually find her tag number and be able to track her.
But we were going to, we probably would never got the money back.
Jameson is facing grand theft and organized scheme to defraud charges.
The message has to go out there. Banks do not call you and tell you to take out cash.
