New tonight, Airbnb is switching up its checkout chore rules.
I think we all are okay with this one
because guests will no longer be able to complete tasks
like stripping beds, washing dishes, and much more.
Fox 35's Matt Trezza explains the company wants
to keep cleanup simple with no more surprises.
Airbnb says they're making these changes
so the hosts have an easier time setting the rules
and the guests have an easier time following them.
Some Airbnb hosts say the changes leave
them looking for more information.
Yeah, that was pretty clear, but they're definitely,
because I'm involved in a couple of Facebook groups,
there are definitely a lot of questions that people have.
The updates are listed on Airbnb's website.
First, they let hosts set their own standards
when it comes to the following categories.
The maximum number of overnight guests,
the unit's quiet hours, whether events are allowed,
if pets are allowed to stay, whether guests can smoke,
if commercial photography is allowed,
and whether guests should lock up when they check out.
The company also allows hosts to ask guests to clean up before leaving,
but now says those requests must be, quote, reasonable.
They say hosts can't ask guests to clean or put away dishes,
do the laundry, take garbage off-site,
or refrain from using utilities at certain times.
Hospitality expert Rob Della Bovi says they're worthwhile changes.
I'm all for as many of these rules as possible because there's just,
it's the wild west right now with Airbnb
and they need to tighten it up on both sides.
He says it makes sense for hosts
to be responsible for the heavy duty cleanup.
Since guests are often paying general cleaning fees with their booking
with Airbnb, they don't think that they should have
to go the extra mile in doing the cleaning as well.
Guests say they try to keep their Airbnb units tidy.
I feel like that's just the courtesy of going to a place,
and you should probably clean up after yourself.
That's kind of how I always approach it.
I clean up before I leave anywhere anyways, but you shouldn't
be made to do that, especially when you're charging for it.
In his statement, Airbnb says, quote,
House rules help guests understand what hosts expect,
but we've heard from our community that they can be confusing,
onerous, and hard to manage.
So we've redesigned them to make them easier
to discover and clearer to set
alongside a new policy
that keeps requests reasonable with no surprises.
Airbnb says these new rules go into effect on November 20th.
