Michelle Monaghan talks about going on a family trip to Indonesia to see Komodo dragons because Robert De Niro told her to and starring in the crime thriller The Whisper Man.
Michelle Monaghan discusses her recent family trip to Indonesia, a humorous encounter with a fan-made book about her, and her upcoming crime thriller \"The Whisper Man\" starring Robert De Niro and Adam Scott.
We love it when you're here.
Happy to be here.
I want to talk about your new movie,
Whisper Man, with Robert De Niro.
Come on, Adam Scott.
Yes.
Amazing, amazing gents.
I want to get into all that stuff.
Welcome.
But first, I want to talk to you about,
you had a big summer trip.
And you have to tell everyone where you went.
We did.
We had a big family trip.
We love a big adventure.
And we went to Indonesia.
It's a wonderful country.
It's incredible.
I highly recommend it.
And we just had the most beautiful time.
It's our second time there, actually.
So you went twice.
We went twice.
Just prior to starting The Whisper Man with Robert De
Niro, we had gotten home from a trip to Indonesia.
We went on a surf trip.
And I was getting ready to start the film.
And I'm pretty excited to be working with Robert De Niro,
as you can imagine.
And I'm trying to figure out, what are things that I might
have in common with him?
What could I possibly bring up with him?
We're two police detectives.
We're driving in a car a lot.
I've got a little bit of imposter syndrome.
And we start chatting.
And I was like, yeah, we just got home from Indonesia.
And he's like, oh, that's great.
Did you see the dragons?
And I was like, what?
He's like, did you see the dragons?
And I was like, what dragons?
He's like, the Komodo dragons.
And I was like, oh my god, I've missed the dragons.
I've missed the dragons.
I said, no, what are you talking about, the Komodo dragons?
So he's like, well, you've got to go back and see
the dragons.
And then I was like, oh my god, I can't
believe I've missed the dragons.
I go home.
And I immediately Google Komodo dragons.
And I'm like, oh, wow, these are amazing creatures.
And I'm thinking to myself, my god, we've got
to go back and see the dragons.
So now we start planning this vacation.
And I say to the family, we're going back to Indonesia.
And we're going to Komodo National Park.
And you're going to see the Komodo dragons.
Because Bob De Niro.
That's the best reason.
He's a great travel agent.
Yeah, exactly.
He's a great travel agent.
But look at this photo.
This is real.
Talk to me about it.
So this is a Komodo dragon.
How big are they?
They are probably about 10 feet long.
They are vicious.
They're prehistoric.
They have an interesting anatomy as well.
I found out that they have two.
The males have two things.
They have two things.
And so I thought that was really fascinating.
And they're very aggressive.
And I'm thinking, gosh, did Bob know that they
had two things as well?
Could have warned me.
Anyway, so I'm learning a lot about the dragons.
But the most important thing is getting that photo.
Because as soon as I get back to this boat that's
taking us there, I'm like, I'm doing that.
Now you got something that you can relate to Robert De Niro.
Yeah, I'm sending a photo to Bob.
So I'm so excited.
I get on the boat.
I get Wi-Fi.
I send the photo to Bob.
I say, Bob, it's amazing.
I'm at Komodo National Park, just like you said.
I'm so excited to see you in a few weeks.
And no response, no response.
We're sitting at lunch.
And my son has my phone, my 12-year-old son.
All of a sudden, he gets the phone.
And he goes, mom, you've got a text from Bob De Niro.
And I was like, oh my god, oh my god, what's it say?
Yeah, and you brought it.
It said, amazing, but I must say I'm
disappointed that you didn't take a picture riding
on his back.
Have fun.
I'm Bob.
I love him.
Come on.
Love Bob.
Love him.
He's the most fun.
Yeah, and then obviously, I'm not.
Now you've got to go back a third time.
No, I'm not.
I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not.
For obvious reasons, no.
I want to ask you about something.
I saw your post, by the way, on your birthday a few months ago.
Happy belated birthday.
Thank you very much.
Really, happy, it's a big one.
Thank you.
And there's a photo.
Yeah, come on.
Have the best year.
Thank you so much.
It is.
Thank you.
But there's something I saw that made me laugh.
And who is this?
And explain this book to me.
That's so funny.
So this is my good friend, April Boyce.
She's a makeup artist on a project
that I was working on.
And she said to me, I had a book earlier this year
come out about sun safety, about kids' awareness about sun
Children's, yes, that's right.
And she was asking me about my book.
And I said, well, you can actually
go and get it on Amazon.
What is the name of your book?
It's a kid's book about sun safety.
That's right.
So she goes, oh, OK, I'll go on Amazon and get the book.
So she goes on Amazon, looks up, she
must have just puts in Michelle Monaghan book.
And this book comes up, which is called
Sorry, I wasn't listening.
I was thinking about Michelle Monaghan.
And she goes, is this the book?
And I was like, are you kidding me?
No, this isn't the book.
Do you know this book existed?
I had no idea this book existed on Amazon whatsoever.
Can you do that?
We had the biggest laugh.
And so what happened, she ordered a few.
And so we were taking like a photo, a couple of photos
in the makeup trailer.
And then for my birthday, she takes a photo
and she's hiding in the corner with the book.
And I see her.
I was like, oh my God, I can't believe you've been doing that.
Then I go away to take my daughter on college tours.
And she proceeds to get every crew member on the set.
To read the book.
They get my parents in on it.
Those are my folks, Bob and Sharon.
There's your mom and dad.
Come on, that's pretty fun.
That's very sweet.
And then as a wrap gift, I get this book.
My husband actually even bought 10 of these.
He journals every morning.
He started journaling in this.
What's in the book?
It's nothing.
It's just, listen, I'm going to get you a couple.
There's absolutely nothing in the book.
It's just lined paper.
You can put anything.
Yeah.
In the paper or in the book.
You don't have to get me a copy.
Oh my God.
That's great.
Nothing in the book.
But I thought we should take one photo.
Can we take a photo just to add
in case you add this to the question.
That's great.
Maybe you're telling me an interesting story.
Right.
So anyway, about the Komodo dragons.
Actually, they don't even need the males to reproduce
because they can reproduce by themselves.
I cannot listen to that.
I find you too fun.
Let's talk about The Whisper Man.
This is a crime thriller.
You, Robert De Niro, Adam Scott.
It's based on a great book.
How do we set up what this story's about?
So it's based on a terrific book.
It's a New York Times psychological thriller
based on a New York Times bestselling novel
by Alex North called The Whisper Man, of course.
And it's about a man trying to find his kidnapped son.
And I play a detective who is investigating
a string of disappearances when I realize
the case that I'm working on mirrors a case
from a decades old case about a serial killer
called The Whisper Man.
And so I team up with a former police detective
by Robert De Niro and we go on the hunt.
It's very, very, very well done.
I wanna show everyone a clip.
Here's Michelle Monahan in The Whisper Man.
Take a look.
You know, I'm not on the job anymore.
It's been a long time.
I retired at least 25 years.
I just, you know, and there's only one Frank Carter.
Your case file mentioned an accomplice to Carter
who was never identified.
I did, I did.
It was a theory and it went cold.
They often do.
Frank Carter still declines all interviews by his lawyers.
He remained the only one he's ever agreed to speak with
since his incarceration.
Got any advice interviewing him?
Yeah, I'd say don't.
Come on, Michelle Monahan, August 28th on Netflix.
More Tonight Show after the break.
Stick around, everybody.
