Michelle Pfeiffer and Elle Fanning talk with "CBS Mornings" about starring in the new series "Margo's Got Money Troubles." The two discuss what drew them to the project and their characters, and what it's like to work together again.
Elle Fanning and Michelle Pfeiffer star in the bold new TV series Margot's Got Money Troubles.
They play a college dropout who gets pregnant and her mom. Fanning's character Margot creates an
alter ego on only fans to provide for her son. We recently spoke with the stars and began with
a scene from the series. $1,200. That's more than I paid for my car. It's of higher quality.
She's all so beautiful. It really is. What are you doing? This is the world that my baby deserves.
The one I won't come close to being able to afford. Get up off the floor. This is so wrong.
You are making a scene. Get yourself back up off the floor young lady. There are no victims
in Bloomingdale's. Elle Fanning and Michelle Pfeiffer are also the show's executive producers.
Welcome. Thank you. This is fun playing mother and daughter, isn't it? It is. I just want to
spend the rest of my career playing her mother in Dakota. It's too much fun. It's her family.
And I know Elle, you were a fan of this book early on. You even voiced the the audio book,
right? Yes. What did you love about Margo's story? Oh my gosh. I mean, Rufy Thorpe is the
author who created these characters. And I think that's what I was struck by really was
the characters. They're so messy and complicated and vivid and colorful. And with Margo in
particular, you know, she faces a lot of struggles and life throws her a lot of hardships and kind
of at every turn she takes the hardest path. But then what comes out of that and what she learns
from that, I felt like I found courage in myself through playing such a courageous character. And
she's full of a lot of optimism. And I, it was just a real privilege to get to play her and
get to be immersed in that, in Rufy's world. Yes. You do such a fantastic job. And Michelle,
what about Cheyenne? What did you like about playing Cheyenne? I just love Cheyenne. I love
how when Cheyenne walks into a room, people just smile and look forward to what she'll be wearing.
I love how unapologetic she is. And she's a wounded creature, somewhat guarded.
But she is fierce about her protection of her daughter. And, you know, like all parents, you
want your children to have more than what you had. And so I think she's, you know, disappointed.
And, you know, doesn't always manage her anger well, but at the root of it, she
loves her daughter deeply and is fiercely protective of her. Yeah. I think that's the
that makes this such a good show and really fun to watch. And what's interesting is that you two
have worked together before. Yes. Yes. Yes. Technically. Yeah. We, this is our third time,
technically. Technically. Yes. Right. Yeah. The first time was with, I am sorry, she was like
two years old. She was doubling for the younger Dakota. Yeah. In like a flashback scene, I played
Dakota. And we played Barbies. Yep. That was my first screen debut. So I was probably like
running around on set and you saw me with my. Oh, yeah. Completely comfortable on set. And then you
were in Maleficent together, right? The sequel to Maleficent. So what's it been like? And I played
her working with mother. Yeah. Almost mother. That's right. Mother-in-law. Yeah. What's it
been like watching Al go up through this whole, you know, through Hollywood and her watching her
acting career? Well, I always look at child actors with some trepidation and concern.
And I don't know what her parents did with both of them. They are the most delightful,
the most grounded, the smartest, funniest, talented. And I don't know what the secret sauce
is. I'd like to, I think you should write a book about it. But and when I saw her in The Great,
oh, my gosh, she's a woman now. And it's been a delight. It's just been a delight to watch them.
It's also delightful knowing that you, Al, and your sister Dakota now have a production
company together. You're executive producers of this show. Yes. And you've got The Nightingale
coming up. That's true. Oh, my gosh. Kristen Hannah. I've read all of her books. I'm such
a fan. I know it's such a good book. I mean, I'm such a fan myself. Yeah, we are actually we're
in the middle of filming that right now. We have started production on that. So we are first time
working together on screen in that capacity. So I'm I'm very lucky to get to, you know,
keep it in the family. And you two, of course, are such superstars and excellent as mother and
daughter. And thank you so much. Congratulations on the success of the show. Thank you. Thank you
so much. Aren't they fantastic? They are. Yeah. All right. Margo's Got Money Troubles that
premieres this Wednesday on Apple TV. It's fascinating to me, Nora, to watch Al because
I remember when she was just Dakota's little sister. Now, not only is she taller than Dakota,
she's also a bona fide actress in her own right. It's just nice to see. Exciting production company.
Really great. They're great.
