Snaps, a lot of series.
What was the biggest takeaway overall from today's performance?
Well, I mean, you're playing a lot of guys.
We got everybody time today, so it's hard to really get a true evaluation.
You gotta look at the film and see exactly who the guys are out there.
Cuz we got guys mixed in, maybe not true ones or true twos or so on and so forth.
So early on, I thought it was good energy.
Then I thought it was a lull toward the end of it.
I thought, now, it was warm out here today, and
we've been inside for the last all week.
So this was, and it was a long practice for us.
I mean, close to two and a half hours.
So that had something to do with the lull there toward the end.
But I mean, obviously, there's some good things out there, and
there's some things we gotta get better at.
Have you seen anyone pull away in the wide receiver room?
Well, we hadn't seen the consistency that I wanna see.
So I think just when somebody I feel like is pulling away,
then they have a bad day, my man.
So we gotta be consistent.
That's the one thing we talked about, is particularly in that room.
I think Malachi has probably been maybe the most consistent guy,
every practice.
I mean, he's brought it.
I think Fenner's had a really good August as well.
Those two guys, I think, have been maybe the most consistent.
Cade's gonna give you everything he's got, so he's consistent with that.
And I think, so there's been some pretty good play.
But JV and Gio, I mean, a little inconsistencies right there.
They're both talented, they're both really good, but
we gotta get more consistency out of them.
Did you balance out the running backs?
And then you gave the young guys a pretty good run, I guess.
Yeah, they did.
They had some good runs, some good plays.
Yeah, I think we just balanced them all out today.
I think the top four guys will certainly be in the rotation there and play.
As we get closer to game, probably zero in on one or two of those guys.
But I mean, man, all four of those guys bring something to the table.
They all have talent, they have good vision, they have good speed.
Some are better than others in protection.
They can catch the ball out of the backfield.
I mean, there's a lot of positives out of all four.
I'm excited about that running back run.
Initial thoughts on JC's performance for that?
Yeah, no, I thought the two practices prior to today,
I thought, man, he was outstanding.
Today wasn't as good as those two practices, I didn't think.
But he made some good plays today, he had the one pick there.
I think, again, we rotated some receivers out there,
some different guys with him.
I mean, that's a little bit tough on him.
I mean, certainly got room to get better, there's no question about it.
But I mean, probably a solid performance, not as good as he was the last two days.
On the defensive side of all, what did you see from Coach Woody,
what he's been able to bring so far to camp?
Yeah, no, I mean, we're still installing, putting a lot of defense in.
I think that we're throwing a lot at the guys,
certainly won't have this much defense in on the first game.
So I think we're trying to figure out what we can do, can't do, and
what the kids can do and can't do.
So what are our calls gonna be?
And what do we need to put the guys in positions to make plays?
And so it's good to see, it helps us on offense to get better.
So again, three more weeks, we've still got a lot to do.
As a play caller, you probably don't like interceptions.
But as head coach, Kenny Woody finds the football a lot.
Yeah, Kenny's had a great camp.
I mean, he's a solid DB for us.
He's probably been the most consistent DB we've had this camp.
He's very aggressive, and he's confident in his ability, which is good.
And he's made some plays.
He had a couple more he could have almost made today as well.
He's been very feisty out there at corner and liked the way he's playing.
Is the message to take some more chances on defense to try to create more turnover?
Well, we gotta be solid, we gotta be sound.
So they're calculated, I think.
And again, once we figure out what we do well, we're gonna do that.
Yeah, we certainly gotta be more aggressive compared to last couple years.
We wanna be a little bit more pressure,
a little bit more aggressive defense to try to create some more habit.
Haven't seen Finley for a couple days.
Is that precautionary, something to worry about?
Yeah, no, I think precautionary.
I feel like he'll be back Monday.
So he was close to going today, so he's fine.
I mean, it's just a little ding.
So one of these camp dings, we've got some guys that are like that.
So fortunately today, I think we pretty unscathed.
There was a couple of dings where guys, I feel like,
at the most would be out just a few days, but we'll be back.
So that's good, cuz I mean,
that's the one thing to worry about on this big scrimmage day.
Has anybody stepped up with Finley down to kinda solidify his spot?
Yeah, I mean, I think KK's been a guy who really like it, both safety and corner.
So he's done both, very versatile, smart player, experienced player.
I think Zay Johnson's one that's gotten a lot of work out there at corner.
Daniel James is another guy that's gotten a lot of work.
Again, we gotta be more consistent though with that position for
those backup guys to feel good about putting them in.
Thomas Johnson didn't play in the spring.
What has been your impression of him?
Yeah, he didn't go in the spring, so this is kinda his first time with us.
He's a very strong player, good motor, smart player, very conscientious.
I think he'll be able to make some plays for us.
I think he's got good size, still learning everything that we're trying to do
defensively, because again, he didn't go this spring.
So I like him, I like Parker, both of those guys on the edges,
I think can really have good seasons for us.
He was supposed to play dog, I think, in the spring initially, and
now is he moving over to N to the other side?
Yeah, he's been playing N for us.
I think he could be a stand-up as well.
So again, he's one of the guys we're trying to figure out what he'd do best and
what package that we're in to see what we wanna do with him.
I think he's got some versatility, so we'll see how that ends up.
Can Huff factor in?
He's a unique story.
Who's that?
Huff.
Huff, yeah, absolutely.
He's a guy who's dealt with some things health-wise, but
the last, I'd say the last four or five practices,
he's done some really good stuff cuz he's got a motor.
And he can run for that, for the size that he has.
So I think he'll certainly cause some problems in front.
We gotta stay healthy and get time on the field.
I think that's what he needs more than anything.
But yeah, I think you got an opportunity to be another big guy up front
that can really move, same with Rulo, who's a young player.
But I think Rulo, both of those guys have similar size that have good twitch.
A lot of freshmen out there.
Have you been happy with what you've seen from those guys?
Yeah, I mean, you're right.
We're playing a lot of freshmen, a lot of young guys.
Yeah, some standing out more than others.
But it's fun to see, like at daylight today,
some of the guys going out and making plays.
And some of those guys are really big today for the first time on the field.
No coaches out there helping them.
But it's fun to see, and they're still making some plays.
So we'll coach through that.
They're playing hard, and some of those guys will be some special teams guys as
well, which is good to see.
How much does that change with five for five?
Yeah.
That now those guys can play and don't have to step.
It does.
So we tell those guys, even just because you don't play in the first game,
continue to get better because these are some guys that will play down the road.
You get a couple of digs and some injuries,
these guys are gonna be able to step in.
So yeah, we don't have to think about holding anybody back.
I really like that.
Like a guy like Gio last year, we could have played him a lot more.
And so we didn't because of that rule.
So I think it's a great rule.
Thanks, everybody.
Thanks, guys.
Thanks, Scott.
